wheel bearing question

i pulled out my wheel bearings and repacked, new seals. the book said to torque to 70 ft/lbs while turning the hub, back off a quarter turn and tighten to 10-15 ft/lbs. well the click in my econo torque wrench was so slight at 15ft/lbs i couldnt feel it. i bumped it up to 25 which is the first place i could feel the click. so my bearing are at 25 ft/lbs. is this too tight?

Alot of guys I know dont even use a torque wrench, they just do it by hand and Ive never seen or heard of any issues. I doubt 10lbs more will kill it.

Might be time for a new torque wrench if you didnt feel or sense the click on yours tho.

I thought it was the same as 2x's. You tighten them to 25 ish and spin the rotor to feed the grease through the bearing wheels, then loosen like an 8th turn and tighten down with your hand only. (plus lock washer thing and stuff)

the reason i couldnt feel the click was the 2 piece locking ring used in 87. pushing in on the socket to release the locking cogs i couldnt tell the difference between the cogs or the torque wrench

Ah I gotcha.

I really doubt 10 whole pounds will kill it. Worst case is you take it apart and do it by hand if it causes any issues down the road.

well went out to loosen bearings just a notch or two. jacked up the truck and there was just a little end play in the axle. seems that the bearings loosened up a little after about a 20 mile drive. does this mean they are wearing out and need replaced? when i washed the old grease out the rollers were a little sloppy in the baskets.
