OOPS I stripped the threads

I have a '77 F-150. It has a '72 460 licoln motor in it. i was replacing the thermostat. When I got the brilliant idea that I would take a wire brush mounted on a grinder and clean the housing and the bolts. Fortunately I got a spare 460 when I got the truck, so I have another set of bolts and a spare housing.
The problem is I stripped the hole out on one. And unfortunately that was the one next to the distributor. I waas told the best thing to do was to put a HELI-COIL in it. is that true?

Heli coils are good fixes. You could try to re tap the hole.

I got told that there isnt the clearance to tap it. And it sits naxt to the distributor. So it is hard enough to put this bolt in. If I go to a bigger bolt wont that mean a bigger head?

there is enoungh room to tap it but you'll need to keep it 2 only one or 2 sizes bigger... the distr may have to come out... may i also recommend a stud/nut combo instead of a bolt...

no leave it on... mark and pull the dist..set aside.. stick rag in hole to prevent debri in motor, grab next tap up from current hole sixe, coat tap in light motor oil, will help lube for fresh cut and collecting shreads.. clean up debri, thread stud into hole a bolt of appropriate size with the top cut off and ground works nicely, double nut the stud and thread it in.... reinstall dist align marks, install thermostat and housing, i recomend anti-size on the bolts where the housing sits, will help prevent broken housing/ bolts later..reattach radiator hose fill with water/anti-freeze and enjoy..........

i stripped the threads out in one of my thermostat bolt holes and went and bought a longer bolt to catch the threads in the back of the hole and it worked. No leakage in 10,000 miles. Just something to try before you go to tapping and heli coiling things.
