looked at a few pics on ebay, and there are several highboys that have the shorter inner wheel well like the second pic...obviously not the definitive answer, just another observation.
I have a 73 body I bought for my 74. The 74 bed is toast and long gone. However, I have the 73 box in the shed next to a 78. I will look and see if I can clarify anything.
hey guys kinda off topic but are the beds the same among 1/2,3/4 and 1 tons?
Yes and no. The 1/2 and 1 ton are the same all years. 3/4 or F250 has the narrower bed bolts for the Hi-Boy frame rails. After 77 1/2 all are the same except the Super Camper Special which kept the narrow spacing and lengthened wheelbase.
So this took forever but I finally swapped the beds. My ol man (who built racecars and 4x4's then raced them) is a bit of an engineer. It runs in the family and I ran some trigonometry on the specs. First off, I know that everyone says it was a short bed...even my brother and neighbors. I measured 3 time in front of them and the measurements came out the same. The bed fit perfectly once I swapped it. The wheel well size really didn't matter to me in the end because my wheels stick out side of the fender lip. I checked clearance at maximum weight (trig again) and found I can go up to 32's until I get a lift. The only thing that I can think of is that the original bed came of a 250 or 350. So long story short, college and my brain paid off, it fits, it works, and looks a heck of a lot better. Thanks for all the input guys.
