I bought a 76 F150 last year and the guy threw in a bunch of other parts. The bed on the truck is pretty banged up so he gave me another one that had all the body work done to it already. The other day as I was painting, the size of the wheel wells caught my eye. They are smaller then the ones on the bed that's on the truck now. The length is the same, the body style is the same, what gives? I don't want to put a bed on that won't work. I'm planning on putting 33's on her.
The wheel wells are the same. Do the one on your truck now look cut? Many people tend to cut out some sheet metal when there is rust and put fender flares on. Or does it look like the wheel wells been patched at one time either on the current bed or the other? It's possible aftermarket patch panels could be off a little. But, originally, the wheel wells should be the same size.

I thought you were talking about the outside. Huh, that is interesting. At first glance I thought maybe that bed in the second pic is one that has the wheelbase that sits further back on super camper specials with the spare tire compartment on the bed. Can you take pics of the outside.
Interesting...................I thought you were talking about the outside wheel arch as well. I'm wondering if this is a difference between a 73-77 1/2 bed and a Late 77 - 79 bed?? Or could one of them be an OEM and the other a cheap repro? Also looking at where the center stake pocket is located it may be a SCS bed and pics from the outside will put that theory to rest. It will be interesting to see how this one shakes out!!!!!
How are the gas fill openings lined up on the driver's side of the other bed? Can you post a pic of the beds showing the same side? When you measured, were both beds the same length overall?
The beds are the same length, same length from front to wheel well and from other end of wheel well to the rear.
I'll try and get another picture of the other side.
Not only did I measure, but in case I got a case of the stupids or crazy vision, when I bought the truck, I stacked the other bed on top of the truck (top to top) and they were the same.
For some reason I want to say the bed with the longer wheel well is from a 1973 but they will still interchange. Sound familiar to anyone? Thats why you will see some bed mats that fit 74-79.
Those must be aftermarket panels, it should have a stake hole (?) on the top over that wheel well. or maybe it was filled in, in any case something doesnt look quite right
