alright went and looked at a 93 f250 today. truck is in really good shape. runs good and starts good. problem is the trans wont shift out of drive, in reverse it still goes forward, and it acts like it still wants to pull when you put it in park. when you take off it acts like its in 2nd gear and it shifts into 3rd. my first thought would be the valve body or possibly a sensor. any help will be greatly appreciated!
i had a c6 that done something similar except it slipped and wouldnt shift from 2nd to 3rd. this one shifts fine, pulls fine, just wont take off in 1st or go into reverse. what really has me stumped is to why it is still wanting to pull in park. you can actually feelt he truck trying to move in park
Does the truck have the E4OD trans, is the shift lever OD light flashing. These trans will go into Limp Mode...... second gear only when there are certain problems. Do not drive it in limp mode........you can burn up the trans.
You can use a OBD1 code reader to see if there are any codes set in memory. Most AP stores have them free use.......One point the fuel pedal must be on the floor to do the reading......... engine off of course.
Could also be the MLPS/trans range sensor..... manual lever position sensor on the trans.
Check the electrical connector on the pax side.......
Special note:
To remove the solenoid plug, remove the heat shield."Do not use pry bars or screw drivers in attempt to remove plug" without shield removed.
Remove solenoid body connector by pushing on the center tab and pulling the wire harness.
To replace push down on solenoid connector until audible click is heard, then replace heat shield.
Your looking for corrosion, bent, broken pins.... water anything nasty.
FIPL (fuel injection pump lever sensor) can also present problems if it is worn out.
i was hoping it was something simple. who knows maybe ill luck out. i know how hard it is to pull a trans. im pretty sure its an 34od but i thought thats the only one that came in these trucks?
Could be E4OD or C6. E4OD has 20 pan bolts, C6 has 17. Which ever one it is, I would still guess a welded forward clutch pack. However the C6 would be much cheaper to fix.
Hopefully more opinions will follow.
yea i wasnt about to crawl under it in all the snow. will have to go back out there when the snow melts. c6 is alot easier to come by around here then the e4od
Check the shift linkage, but it could also be something much more serious. Usually its a very bad sign when an auto transmission can't even pull away from a flat curb.
Could be a lot of things but unless you want to risk a new transmission or have the time to play with this one yourself, I would avoid this one.
Not going into reverse is a dead give away of something internally wrong. Either mechanical, or hydraulic. The transmission might be rebuildable, but for a condition like this to happen, something must be coming apart inside. Dropping the pan won't always show you any warning signs either.
I also had a c6 do this to me. Although mine still shifted 1,2,3 it did it in any position of th lever. I just swapped trannies. But even the c6 is getting hard to find for our application. The one I have down in the shed came all the way from Nevada! Figured I would hold on to it in case some one ever needs one.
im more then likely going to get it anyways. i dont mind work. wouldnt be my first trans i put in lol. what all trans will bolt up? is the 7.3 powerstroke the only one? or will a 6.9 bolt up? or even a big block gas lol idc what kind it is as long as it pulls
Early powerstrokes can work but need to be modded (IDI takes a 4 stud converter vs a 6 stud on the stroker and you will need to swap the solenoid body from the OLDER transmission into the newer one)
Big block will not work.
Diesel transmissions all the way back to 1983 will work, but the E4OD is the longest of all your options so the drive shaft will need to be changed to a longer one.
Your options are:
C6 auto - 3 speed slusher (1983-1988 except for some fleet vehicles in later years)
T19 - 4 speed stick (T18 with granny gear also possible with a T19 diesel bell housing) (1983-1988)
ZF5 - 5 speed stick with overdrive 5th gear (1987 up)
E4OD auto - 4 speed overdrive with locking converter (1989 up)
The years are a general rule for what you are likely to find. Some might be custom order and come with transmissions that fall outside those guidelines. Uhaul trucks for example were using C6 transmissions well into the 90s even though the C6 was more or less discontinued for private sales.
