Ok guys. I'm greeting frustrated here! Second truck I've owned that did this crap on me. 97 f250 heavy duty 5.8 4x4 e40d. I'm getting the flashing od light and hard/weird shifts. Pulled codes got code 452 vss signal fault. First few times it happened the speedo acted fine or at least I didn't see it act up. Well this morning I'm almost at work truck was acting fine. I stop at a light and then start off and it's holding first gear way too long, finally shifted into second but didn't slam into gear but did seem to do a "double shift" like in and out if that makes sense. When it was still in first I looked down at speedo and it went nuts, bouncing needle and odometer went blank but then came back on and needle was steady but truck continued to shift weird the rest of way to work. I'm going to pull the vss in a few to see if it's dirty but would like to hear any other ideas you guys might have
The VSS will not make the odometer LCD display to go blank.
Sounds more like a wiring problem inside the cab. Maybe the dome light screw?
What was the RABS yellow lamp in the cluster doing? (on, off or flashing)
i didn't notice the rabs light doing anything but it may have been. Odometer was only out for a second. I'm thinking I might pull the cluster and check connections to the psom. I guess that would be a good place to start anyhow. Been driving truck all morning and all seems fine now but that's how it happened before too so I'm sure problem is still there since you say vss would not cause it to go blank.
Ok so I did check the dome light. There are three screws in there and one of them was some what loose. Truck has been fine all day. Don't know if that had anything to do with it. I would love to get some idea how that would affect speedo. I believe sub ford would just like to know the reason behind it. Got my fingers crossed that it may have helped.
There is a screw in the dome light that sometime shorts the dome light wire to ground. That is one of the two circuits that powers the PSOM. The PSOM is what powers the speedometer head and the odometer LCD display.
Ok so just wanted to update anyone who may be interested. Speedo went out on me a little while ago while driving so I hit the dash right above cluster and it came right back on. So now I just have to pull cluster and see if I can see why.
