Good to hear im not the only one. Like in that thread, I know I lubed up the o-ring because i had oil spilling over the edge...I also remember tightening it down a bit because it started leaking afterwards...just cant believe how tight this is on there...oh well, guess at worst case i'll use tin snips and cut off the filter and use the needle nose pliers idea..definitely covering the new one in oil and just tightening it with my hand and not torquing down on it...wonder whats going on making it stick this bad..

I have to remove filters that are bigger than the 7.3 filters and occasionally they are too tight for the usual filter wrench. I have always had success using a chisel and hammer, (big). Put the business end of the chisel on the rolled flange up next to the engine block and smack it with the hammer in the appropriate direction. It may only move a few thousanths of an inch but keep at it and it will come off. Dirty and testy job, not fun.

I use the same filter wrench that F350-6 uses and I use a 3 foot breaker bar on it.
It simply does not slip or crush the filter, it has a large curved "shoe" on the inside to even out the pressure and give a 360 degree compression on the filter can.
The breaker bar provides enough irresistable torque to the filter that it simply turns with no drama whatsoever.
There is no substitute for that huge filter wrench!

I put mine on by hand, and it comes off the same way. I spin it until the gasket hits the surface, then one more turn by hand. Never had one leak or get stuck.

i just usually get some electrical take and tape a 1/4 stick of dynamite to the oil filter and blast them off. works like a charm.

Wal-Mart sells a filter wrench that has teeth on it, kinda like a big rounded channel-lok. I've had luck with those before on other cars, but not sure if it's made big enough to fit the 7.3 filter. Pretty cheap though. If you have the means might you can try welding or JB Weld a nut to the bottom of the filter and use a socket.

Thats what i started doing, at first i was scared of it falling off, but it was always tighter to get off that it was put on, so its almost like the rubber swells with the oil.

Yes, the rubber does swell with the oil on it. That is why you do not want to overtighten it, because it will get harder to remove.

I have had trouble with lots of oil filters on other trucks, but never on my own. (but none have been as bad as the OP, I do know it can be scary not being able to get it off )

Merry Christmas!

for future reference, put that filter wrench up as high as it will go without hitting the filter housing. the strength of the filter is at the top. anywhere lower and it will crush it and do u no good. glad u finally got it off

I've learned that most people just grab and PULL full force straight away. Hopefully there will be no next time, but if there is, use a steady pull, and tap the side with a hammer. Don;t over pull, just constant pressure. Also, I had slippage once as well and double over some 120 grit sandpaper and came right off.
