This is on my '94 7.3L factory turbo. I have a fuel leak at the bottom of my filter. I have had it for weeks now and it's KILLING my fuel mileage. It all started when I put on a new WIX filter. I have tightened the filter to the top as tight as I can get it and also with the water separator at the bottom but it still leaks. I have wiped the bottom of the filter dry numerous times to see where it leaks. It seems that the ring seal is not sealing correctly. I have not tried replacing the seal because the seal can not be bought alone. It only comes with a new filter. At $40 a filter I can't see getting it just for a seal. Besides the seal looks the same when compared to a new one at the parts store. Anyone else have this problem? and if you did what did you do to fix it?
Do you have the old filter? Can you take the seal from it? What is the seal made of? Maybe you can find gasket material and cut out a new one?
How long do you plan on having the truck? If you will have it for a while just buy a new filter and take the seal off of it.... Eventually you will use the new filter... I know it sucks putting out $40.... That way you will know if its the seal or the filter... If the new seal does not work its probably the filter... If the filter leaks I would return it.... Actually, I would try to return the one you have... sounds like its defective...
When you say wix filter, are you using a Napa filter? I believe wix makes their filters. There are 3 different filters you can use. I use the Napa 3417 (I believe is the correct number) that doesn't have the screw on water seperator at the bottom, and it's cheaper. I used to have problems getting the seal to seal correctly as well which is why I went to a different style of filter.
I bought the filter at O'Reillys. It is a wix because it says it on the side and came in a wix box. No I do not have the old filter. I would rather keep the truck all original and not remove something.
Im new to the whole diesel thing but once when changing the oil filter in a truck i didnt realise the old seal was stuck on the motor. So when i put the new filter on there was 2 seals on and oil poured out .Dont know if this could happen on a fuel filter or not.
No double seal and I did not lube the seal on first install. It did get diesel all over it when I took it apart twice now. Should it have had oil on it instead?
