I have 19000 miles on my 04 psd. the indicater on the air filter housing has not moved much in 19000 miles. In fact it is only on the first line. During the oil and fuel filter change yesterday, I opened the filter housing and looked in. The filter did not appear to be dirty. A little dirt here and there but it looked good. I tried briefly to remove it but it seemed like a real PIA and time did not allow.
I realize driving conditions determine the life of a filter but what is rough time frame or mileage interval when the filter needs changing?
I don't want to neglect anything.

Reason: an omission
My 04 has 60,000 miles on my filter. the indicater has not moved, pulled filter out and looks clean. I allso checked indicater with vac. pump and it's ok. If it's clean leave it alone.
Those indicators suck, and a lot of the time, they are broken (where the clear plastic is glued to the back part). The maint interval is 30,000. I just changed mine at 30,000. There is an article in the tech folder explaining how to remove/ replace. Once you've done it once you get the hang of it.
Yes the air filter indicator is not worth much/if anything to help you. The norm is 30 K but if you go 4X4 in real dusty areas or construction where the dirt is flying I would change sooner. Even a parcially plugged filter will effect fuel mileage. The price of fuel now will pay for a new filter real soon and even save you $$$.
