I need to pull the instrument panel, so I need to pull the wiper **** and heater and fan control *****. If I go to NAPA and ask for a "hook tool", are they going to have any idea what I'm talking about? Is this a standard tool for this sort of thing?
I just make mine from paper clips (the sturdy ones, not the Chinese crap). Or you can use an o-ring pic.
Straighten the paper clip and put about an 1/8" 90 degree bend in one end.
Or you can use a dental pic,,, I have one from somewhere,, has a straight pointy end, and a hooked end, or I had an old small straight screwdriver I bent purposely for that,, it is somewhere in the big box!
yeah i just used a dental type pick i got them in a pack from napa in the sales bin it comes with a straight one a 90 degree one a slighly hooked and another different hook one only cost me like $5
"Are you talking about taking the bezel off around the guages, heater, radio, wiper and, headlight switch?"
Yes. I bought a new dash pad, but to remove the old one I need to get to the nuts on the driver's side (the middle and passenger side were fairly accessible by taking out the glove box), so it looks like taking the instrument panel apart seems to be the way to go. I'd like to replace the light bulbs in it anyway. My temperature and fuel gauges are a bit interactive too, and I'm told cleaning up the connections and the grounding connections will help this as well.

Ok, to take out the dash bezel around the guages, you just take the ***** off the radio, wiper, and headlight switch (You remove this by pushing the button on top of the headlight switch and the **** and shaft are attached as mentioned earlier, and pull it out). Then you take off the little retaining nuts that are threaded behind the radio ***** and pull that little radio panel off. Then you just unscrew all the screws on the bezel and pull it off. After you take it off, you will see how to take the guages out (screws). You don't need a puller to take this out, just simple tools.
OK. I took an old cheapo jewelers screwdriver I had and made a hook tool out of it and got the ***** off without too much trouble. I took the instrument panel out and got the old dash pad off. I cleaned everything up and test-fitted the new dash pad, which seems like it's going to fit pretty well.
The white plastic in the panel where the dash lights mount has essentially turned to dust around some of the holes, so the little dash lights don't fit tight anymore, which is essential because they have to make the connections on the back side. I may be able to put a washer on the front side to make the fit tighter. I am going to replace all the bulbs and put it back together. Now that I've had it apart, it's not all that involved, so I'm OK with putting it back together for the time being and ordering the parts to refurbish the instrument panel as a later project.
