Hi , I just joined the site and I'm looking for info .
I have a 01 F350 with a 7.3 in it . I have approx 260 k on the truck . Being in Il where the winter temps vary from mid 30's to negative single digits in the winter my truck has been overflowing oil when its started from cold . Usually it happens when the temps are below 20 degrees F and its not plugged in. I run 15 /40 in it and have a few normal oil leaks for a truck with the mileage . I know what the truck is RATED to start down to . I havent been able to see where the oil is coming from but it is noticable . When the engine warms up its not a problem .
Also when the warm up is over ( about ten min) I drive and when the engine reaches about 2k rpm or 30 to 40 mph I hear a gasping for air and the rpms drop until the truck is driven for awhile . All of this happens in the colder temps . Any info would be helpful .
the sound is normal it is the truck worming up. you might need to rum 5/40 t6 oil at that cold. as for the oil over running dont know of that but lock between the heads behind the fuel filter if the is oil there clean it good and look for it. others well have the links that you need.
Thanks . I'll check it out .
This just started within the last two years intermittently . I've always run the 15/40 with no problem . I'll also do a plug in overnight and then check it . I just didnt know if the was an oil pressure overflow saftey type valve that was causing this .
i would normally have a good link that you could use but my computer is dead right know. but most of the time the oil is just leaking out. and at 260 the valve it the turbo pestle" evbp" is probably leaking. if the oil on on the back bottom of the motor it is draining out if the valley under the turbo.
Sounds like the ebpv is the noise you're hearing and could also be the leak you're referring to. next time you crank your truck, get ready with a flashlight and take a look under the turbo. When the ebpv is activated, oil pressure is sent to close the ebpv, and this normally is only activated in cold weather.
