so i currently have a 1978 f250 with a 400 and a np435. i heard some noises that sounded like a bad throwout bearing. i investigated and turns out ill need to rebuild the np435. i was wondering what would be a decent transmission to link up to this motor. id prefer a transmission with overdrive. i tow a lot of friends projects to the drag strip. soon ill be towing my own. automatic or standard. not a big deal to me
The ZF series were used for both gas and diesel in the F 250/350s. I think they use a hydraulic clutch so you would have to plan for that. Most of the Mopar/Gm guys who have the New Venture trannies seem to like them.
Many of the modern auto/od trannies will need a computer to work.

My 78 F150 had a 4 speed manual that had a overdrive instead of the granny low gear. That was a long time ago and I can't remember what it was called.
If it was me and I wanted to go automatic I would get a C6 and have it built for towing. The 79 F250 I had with a 400 had a BW T18 and it only lasted 103K before the idler bearing between the input shaft and main shaft went out and toasted the tranny, that was our last manual.

Any transmission that will bolt up to a 460 will also bolt up to the 400M and the newer manuals had OD but you would have to deal with the hydraulic clutch.
