how fast are your trucks out there I got my 300 up to at least 95 but not quite 100. I know this evenn tho my speedo is stock because i was racing my budy who has a 2000 chevy 1500 with the 5.3 motor and i beat him (only cause his speed governor kicks in at 95 adn i passed him but a win is a win right). MY pretty much stock too but i am running a 2.75 rear end. Just curious if any one has gone faster and how much more. Be honest please.
I've had my stock (except for no muffler, hollowed cat) '83 300 4 speed manual up to 115 mph racin my friend's 76 chevy 4x4 with a somewhat souped up 350 4 speed manual. We drag raced another time and off the line I was quicker and all the way up to 90 we were side by side, this guy's got a 4-barrel and I know for a fact that it was kicking in, I could hear it. My truck has stock 1 barrel! And actually now that I think about it, at the time i had stock exhaust on mine too! No lie...
I've driven with the cruise set at ~95 in my old beast. That's with a PSOM calibrated for the actual tire size, so it's accurate. The needle was pegged hard and it took a few moments for it to come off peg and start drifting down.
The coil burnt out on the return trip 20mi from home...
On my '91 EFI 4.9, with no cats or mufflers, automatic trans, stock gears, and a full tank of gas, I've gotten it up to I'm gonna guess about 120mph. The stock 85mph speedo was wrapped around to the N on my gear selector. This was going down I-20. I raced a friend of mine to school one day in his Nissan Sentra, and when we got to school, he said we were going about 120, so 120 it is. If only the 300 could breath at higher rpm's and had better gearing, it would go faster. I like faster.....
mine has been to about 100.. of course it coulda been faster cuz the needle was on that needle stop pin after the scale ya know what i mean... but that was in fourth gear.. when i shifted into fifth.. haha it went back down to 90
Mine will pull hard to about 90 then it hits a brick wall. That's with no wind; give me a little tailwind and she'll go faster than that. That's with a stock motor, 3.08 gears, and stock tires.
What's that smell??? I think it's bull*****. I'm sorry to rain on the parade, but let's do some math. A stock EFI 300 with 3.08's, stock size tires, and 5 speed goes 60 mph@2000 rpm. It would take 4000 rpm to get to 120. There is no way it will pull over about 3100-3300 rpm in high gear, and it won't pull a 2.73 gear that well either. The auto's don't pull that well on the top end. Will the AOD even give you high gear at WOT?
I know a few of the guys are telling it straight, but there's some stories being told by some people, and I think you know who you are.
I can pull about 3000 rpm in high gear, which is about 93-95 mph. Those of you that have been here a while know what my truck is capable of performance wise compared to other stock EFI 300's.
120 on a 2.73 would be ~3200 rpm. I know on mine (which i'm not sure of the gear) I have had it at ~4500 in fourth. It might be a 3.08, but my tach and speedo don't quite line up with the numbers a 3.08 should generate. I've got a completely stock truck with a K&N replacement panel filter (no sticker, so i'm losin ~20hp right there hehehe). My brother who was 'pacing' me in his '97 Mitsu Mirage says his speedo was around 110 or so, but stock speedo's aren't particularly accurate so I don't know. Thankfully smokey wasn't around to let me know exactly how fast I was goin
For those who don't believe me when I say I've had my truck up to 120mph, let me shed some light on you. My truck, when I want it to, will shift into 2nd gear at 35mph, 3rd gear at 65mph, and into overdrive at 85mph, and still pull hard. This is all with stock gears (as far as I know...previous owners were a construction company), an automatic tranny, stock motor w/ the exception of new plugs, and true dual exhaust minus cats and mufflers. Of course, I used up about 3/8 of a tank of gas in doing so, but it was done none the less. Just goes to show how damn good the 300 truly is, with the exception of being a slight gas hog.
Mine's completely stock, 3 spd + od. Normally, I shift into 2nd at 10 mph, 3rd at 20, 4th at 40. If I really really push it, I can get to 60 in 2nd. Thats risky though. Whilst racing I shifted outta 2nd at 45, outta 3rd at 85. I don't know what gears I have, and my tires are normal size, 235/75/15. Maybe if someone doesn't believe I'll put it on video next time!
Also, recently I advanced my timing just a little bit, man it really helps in low rpm's!! My truck's got some real get up and go now!
80 mph is as fast as I have taken it. No need to go faster, in my truck at least. Sorry guys, my Ford is an everyday driver and my work truck. I have other vehicles for play.
