I feel guilty glamorizing excessive speeding. Actually, as I said, I rarely exceed the speed limit - I'm usually being passed MOST of the time. There's only one smart place to speed - the track.
I think my modded 300 could do 120, but maybe not. I don't really care. I'm satisfied with it's quickness to 80. Every time I see someone blaze by doin' 100ish in traffic - I hope for a trooper up ahead! Busy roads are NO place for excessive speed. The troopers south of Denver were VERY busy today. I cruised on by doin' my usual 75ish (the limit).
my truck (see sig) has been up to about 100 while chasing down a gen 2 L who was messing with me (note i wasnt racing but we were just screwing around a little).
while driving along in a contruction zone, the speed zone checker thing is either dead on what im doing or within 1 mph, i know for a fact those are accurate except when there is a decent amount of traffic going by at the same spot at once. i regularly cruise at 75-85 on the interstate and my truck feels like it can easily bury the speedometer.
B&S, my truck actually seems to run faster in 4th than in 5th. In 4th the speed limiter kicks in at 96 mph, which is around 3800 rpm. In 5th on the same stretch of road I can get to about 3100 rpm which I believe is about 93 mph. It takes so long to get there in 5th I'm starting up a hill at the end, so it might go faster given enough room, but if it can't get there in nearly a mile of WOT more room isn't going to help much. Some vehicles base the speed limiter on a calculation between rpm and gear. That is why changing gears overcomes the limiter. On the trucks it uses the ABS sensor in the rearend if ABS equipped, without ABS it uses the cruise control signal. I think all the EFI trucks have RABS and would use the sensor, but I'm not sure. I know my 90 has it and my uncle's 88 had it.
Oops, I forgot to mention that I had a thought about the 6500 rpm bone stock 300 above. Maybe the "racing tach/shift light/redline light" is incorrectly set for a 4 cylinder instead of a 6. That would make the rpm read 6000 rpm when the engine was only turning 4000. Just a thought.....

Sorry about the triple post, my computer was telling me it lost communication with the server so I submitted it too many times. By the time com. was regained it was too late to delete.
i don't know about this 120+ mph talk; however, I got clocked (and ticketed) at 91mph, after I let off the gas & got on the brake. I figured I was cruising about 100-105, and the officer mentioned that was after I was slowing down.
My '84 300 (with 4bbl, duals, intake, 3.50 gears & 3-on-the-tree, 255/60/R15s, tailgate up) with pretty tapped (4000-4500rpm), when I was nailed.
With my stock motor & small cam, that is about as fast as I could go. even with the 2.47s, it would quit pushing at a little over 3K rpms, and leave me about the same position on the speedo (I put different gears in the speedo when I swapped the rear).
bronc, the cam i installed ran me $109 out of the summit cataloge and i got the lifters at a steal. with the cam, lifters and gaskets it ran me just a tad over $200. it was money well spent after i got the bugs worked out (still have to set the timing right), recently gave it a tune up and it seems to run better (no difference in MPG). i figured out my previous "bugs" bad spark plugs wires and they were new (under 3000 miles), o well. now i changed my mind, the cam i installed (crane powermax truck cam) is perfect for EFI. the computer doesnt seem to mind the changes and it has it pulls harder from just above idle to WOT. im still a little uncertain if a computer flash or chip would maximize the cam or not. on a carb'd 300 i assume it'll make a bigger difference. sorry for hi-jacking the thread. another thing, at these "120+ MPH", didnt ur truck(s) start the shake or ride bad? i know at around 95 mine starts to shake a little (probaly due to the tires).
I've looked but haven't seen the "Crane Powermax Truck Cam" in Summit. Is it in the Summit Trucks catalog? 'Got a part number?
The fastest I've ever gone was (a calculated) 108, based on extrapolation from 85 mph @ 3300 rpm - to about 108 @ 4000.
(That was on a long straight stretch of deserted 4 lane interstate with good weather). Good tires, front & rear sway bars borrowed from my '84 parts Bronco. Rear air shocks - mostly for pulling loads. A fully rebuilt front suspension (ball joints, radius arm bushings, CP bushing, steering lingage, tie rod ends, etc. VERY TIGHT. Practically new, maybe better with the sway bar mods that didn't come on my '82.
The short answer - NO - it was smooth - I just backed off! I don't like pushing my luck!
Still, I doubt I'll do it again - I prefer to just keep up with the mainstream - which is around 5 - 10 over the posted. It REALLY IS a foolish game - playing "ricky racer" on public roads. From now on I'll take it to the track - like I'm teaching my sons. (Gotta practice what you preach!)
the cam is found in the truck/SUV section. sorry, dont have a part number handy, my summit book is are my apartment and im at home (yes, i am a college student =) )
