I have had my 77 with a 300, 3 speed manual, 29" tires and unknown gears to 100 mph numerous times, and have the pics on my website to prove it: speedo pictures
I've had my 93 up to cut-out speed. I think its at 110mph I'm not sure. Its a 5spd and I held it 4th the whole way. I was trying to keep up with some chicks in a Grand Am GT on my way to college . I've done it a few times and it still runs great, just drinks the gas when I get going that fast.
Of all these claims I see one post specifying a calibrated speedometer. How many of you have had your speedometer professionally calibrated or checked it on a dyno? I can see 100 mph with a stock truck if the road is straight for several miles and possibly slightly downhill or with a tailwind. The EFI trucks have a speed limiter that doesn't allow them to reach that speed. I will believe an over 100 mph claim on an EFI 300 when I see it in person, and then see the accuracy of the speedometer verified. I have run my other truck to top speed one time just to see what it would do and it went right around the factory claimed 142 mph. I then varified the numbers on the dyno, even though being a brand new truck it should have a fairly accurate speedometer. That truck has 450 hp, verified on the dyno. A stock 300 has 150 hp at best. There is not 300 hp difference in running 120 to 142, especially considering the less aerodynamic design of the older trucks. Based on the ability to run 142 with 450 hp, with the same vehicle it would take roughly 265 hp to go 120, and roughly 160 hp to go 100. I can believe a stocker making 160 hp. I don't believe 265 for a second. Actually, there are probably not many modified 300's out there making 265 hp.
As for beating a 2000 GM truck with a 5.3, there's either something wrong with his truck or he's sandbagging. Those trucks run high 15's in the quarter mile. A stock 300 runs in the 19's. Even if you had more top end, by the time you got to use it he would be long gone.
Like I said, I don't want to rain on the parade, but let's have a dose of reality.
it doesnt take much hp to reach 100, maybe take a while to get there, but to actually reach that speed in a pickup is not hard. the first cars to do so back in the 40's-50's didnt have the hp levels that we do, and were probably just as heavy, yet they broke 100mph easy. acceleration does not determine top end speed, but rather how fast you can get to it.
now i know my speedo isnt exactly 100% accurate, but in OD with tall gears, and original size tires, when the needle hits the OD symbol on the selector, your going past 100 mph, short and simple. if you dont believe it, try it sometime, but dont tell those of those of us who have seen what we have seen, that we didnt see it.
while i try not to make it a habit of driving too fast i have buried the speedo in my stock 86 f150 with a 300, to the "P" in MPH it took a while but i did it.

His post didn't appear to me to be telling anyone else they didn't see something - he just seems to be saying HE didn't see it.

My speedo is calibrated for my tire size and I've checked it with a stopwatch several times, so I know it's within 2% (probably less than 1%) error. I've set the cruise higher than the PSOM shows (~87mph), and I know I could've gone faster if I had wanted to, so I think my stocker pushing 3 tons of brick-shaped steel could break 100mph. I think your hp/speed numbers are way off - you'd have to know rolling resistance, aerodynamic drag, & driveline losses to come up with even a close guess as to what it would take to get to a particular speed. JMO
call me a liar on my pickup? i got an I6 300 '94 and when i had no cats or mufflers just str8's i got clocked doing 127, i got a copy of the ticket to prove it, just got my license back last month, glad it was on the reservation and not on state highway.
chuckman, you're not even one of the people I'm doubting.
Where did I say acceleration determined top speed? I didn't say it. Anywhere. I'm guessing you are referring to the race against the 5.3 Chevy. All I said about that was the Chevy would be long gone before the Ford ever got to top speed. They'd probably have to race for 3 or 4 miles for the Ford to come out on top. If they raced from highway speeds it wouldn't be so bad, but probably still quite a ways before the Ford started to pull away. In either case, the 5.3 will brutalize a 300 in a race until it hits the limiter. I'm making myself sick saying a GM will outperform a Ford, but that's how it is.
The only thing that determines top speed is the ratio of power to drag. A truck with a 300 has lots of drag and not much power. The cars of the 40's and 50's might have gone faster with less power, but they weren't bricks on wheels that were 6ft tall and 6 ft wide. Many were actually decent aerodynamically. They also didn't lose power to things like power steering pumps, AC compressors, AIR pumps, etc. Those are all things that an EFI 300 has to deal with, and is a lot of the reason the carbed trucks have more top end.
As I have stated before, I can believe many of the claimed top speeds posted. I do not believe the claims of a stock 300 going 115-120. I certainly don't believe an EFI 300 will run 120 because the speed limiter will catch it before it gets there. The highest limiter I know of on an F-150 from that era is 110mph, aand there are several people on this forum that have stated that it's only 95mph for the 300. Regardless of whether it's 95 or 110, both are before 120.
well mine was all stock except the pipes so tell me why i got clocked doing OVER 120 MPH? maybe JUST MAYBE your figures could be wrong?? BTW my limiter kicks in at 4000RPM... anyway to take those damn things off?

How did you defeat the speed limiter? Once again, I call BS unless you were going down a mountain side with a tail wind. Of course even in those conditions the speed limiter will shut things down.
Well back when old Baby Blue had the stock 300 with a single one chamber FLowmaster, I had my tachometer up to 4500 in 3rd. At that time I had 33x12.50's all the way around and 3.70 gears. I was also chasing a 2001 Ford that, because of a big change in tiresize, had a speed limiter of 110. I went to an rpm and speed calculator and it says that when I was turning 4500 rpm, I was doing 119 mph. I believe it because I caught that stupid 4.6 pretty quick. Whats kinda funny is that now my engine is slightly modified (see my sig) the addition of 35 inch tires instead of 33's made it where I can only get 4000 rpm in 3rd. Guess that means my littel 2 bbl aint big enough, but it'll sure get there a lot faster than it used to! The same calculator shows that for my current setup I am running 108 mph at 4000 rpm.

There isn't a rev limiter that's of any use, it's set way too high. The only thing that shuts it off is a top speed limiter.
dude i have the gosh darnn ticket to prove it. yes i was going down hill but i got clocked at 127 w/ a standing radar gun by officer T. Amiotte on july 17th 2002 at 10:33 PM... i would show you the ticket but i have no access to a scanner, and yes i was going down hill but not hardly
