I meet a pickup pulling a 5th wheel the other day and saw something that I've never seen before. He had a 4 wheeler quad mounted above his cab!! The 5th wheel was still higher so it didn't stick out like a sore thumb. I can't imagine the ramps, etc. he would have to have to get it down. I don't know about the frame work that would be necessary to mount it though, I couldn't see that on the way by. It would have to come down and mount into the frame somehow. Pretty cool idea, I would love to take one with us on our travels, not only to have fun with but to use instead of driving the truck short distances. I never did like starting it up just to go a mile or two. More weight on the pickup though. I'm not pulling that trailer in my signature behind the 5er anymore, that was a pain in the a**, can't back up!!

Reason: forgot
This camper used to have support legs running from the front lower edge of the bunk down to the step bars. Those are welded to the frame BTW. It was really stupid and cracked the front window on the camper before I got it. That bed moves a lot offroad! But I can't see any reason why I can't build a roof rack off those step bars for when the camper isn't on. They aren't going anywhere.
I don't see any reason why you can't do it Glenn. I'd try it if I needed/wanted to haul like you. Wouldn't be much more than building a frame and platform and rig up some aluminum ramps so they are light. I say go for it. I see pickups with racks over the roof all the time hauling wood, ladders, etc. A modified stronger, shorter version of something like that would work. It's a matter of allowing enough clearance between your fiver and the rear of the platform for turning. It'd be quite a ways up front, maybe too front heavy??
Ya, My nephune can maybe get me a good deal on a quad. I was at a flea market and saw a setup with a rotating wheel for a trailer. The trailer was bolted solid to the back of the camper and it could back up all it wanted to and this wheel would just spin around according to the direction of backing up. He said they were good for 80mph and street legal. I just don't want another trailer behind me. Thanks RR and Darin, I'm not even sure what a quad weights. I'm talking about a small one. I'm just expecting to much out of this poor, old PSD, LOL.
Hi Glenn,
A Quad on the roof is nothing. I saw a guys set-up on an obs that had a Rhino on the roof and 2 Quads in the bed standing on their rear wheels. He was pulling (approx) a 30+ toy hauler which I presume was also full of toys. It looked like a cage was built that bolted through the bed into the frame and also appeared to be bolted to the frame through the cab. I don't know for sure about that but thats what it looked like. I'm sure you could find some company online that sells a cage that would hold a quad. Good Luck!!
Yea, he would prob be way over the max tow capacity. I think our trucks are rated at 4K in the bed right? just a guess... I bet insurance would have a hell of an investigation before making a payout too.
No Mike but I should be. The hawk brakes shoes I put on really help but..... I gutted out my ebpv so can't do a DIY. I've been considering the hydobrake setup also.
