Diesel storage

Hi guys. I did a search and found some info but j thought I would open up new discussion.

My 7.3 isn't getting driven much lately. It's sat in my garage since July. It's cold now and will probably be sitting all winter as well as I work on the suspension, underside, interior, paint.

Should I add a biocide and/or stabilizer?

Any more recommendations on how to get the thing ready for some non driving action?

Thanks!

I would add some diesel kleen or other fuel additive. Biocide would not be necessary unless you run biodiesel.

It's not really an issue. We park equipment with regular #2 in the fall and let it sit all winter or even until fall again before its used. She'll fire right back up as long as the batts are good.

Great. Thanks for the reply. She has #2 in her now. So I'll do as you suggest.

Thanks again.

I parked a 81 Jetta diesel for 10 years and it fired right up and got 40 mpg on that diesel. I never put any thing in it before storage.

Regular diesel will be OK, but bio will not. In my area (southern IL) you cannot buy regular diesel at the gas stations. They all have a little biofuel added. I left a clear jar 1/2 full of b11 in my shop in late June. Just last week, I looked at it and noticed the fuel had separated (clear on top and red on bottom). There was also a crusty brown film on the jar around where the red part of the fuel was. Scared me to death. I shook the jar and mixed the fuel back up, but the brown film stayed. I tried scraping it out with a screwdriver, and it reminded me of thick, sticky tar.

I showed the jar to my fuel salesman, and he confirmed it wasn't algae. He reluctantly told me that the bio had "fallen out". He also admitted that was the reason he drained the fuel out of his 5000 ford diesel tractor last month and added 5 gallon of kerosene, started the engine and let it run for 30min. He only uses the tractor to mow, and wasn't going to run it til next spring.

Anyway, maybe it's not a coincidence we've rebuilt diesel pumps on our combine and 2 tractors in the last 3yrs.
