I already have a pop-up gooseneck (the kind where you pull the handle by the wheels and it pops out) in my bed, and have a couple of questions-
1- can I mount a 5th wheel even though I already have the gooseneck plates bolted to the frame, or should I get a goose to 5th adapter
2- the top of my bed sits at 57", and I measured a few 5ers around where I work, and they are all around 54"-58", how the heck do I get a trailer with the minimum 6" of clearance so I don't smash my bed rails?
If its a B&W brand pop-up hitch, you can buy a kit that mounts right into your gooseneck ball "hole". If you want to tow a goose, just remove the fifthwheel and pop back in your gooseneck ball.
If you have a pop-up brand gooseneck hitch your options are limited, you cannot install the rail style 5W hitch around the hitch you have. If you have the B&W turnover ball they make the Companion 5W hitch which is an excellent product and that's what I use, but they are expensive. A goosneck adapter is another alternative i've installed several myself. I've never heard of the adapter cracking a frame. It doesn't put any more stress on the pinbox than 5W hitch.
As far as your clearance concerns that usually isn't an issue as all the adapters and the pin boxes themselves are adjustable and when I've installed them they are usually adjust all the way up leaving plenty of room the raise the trailer off the bed.
I used an adaptor on the last trailer and it worked fine. The thing with the adapor is you are essentially putting a lever on the original designed frame. Some frames can take the added stress, some might not be able to. For me the question is not with the frame but th actual KingPin Box. My concern is in a hard braking situation, is the framing to the kingpin going to be able to with stand and not fold up? The trailer I have now is bigger than the last one, which is why I decided to sell the adaptor and get the 5th companion. I already had the turn over ball, so for me it was easy. My biggest thing is I dont like the rails and stuff in the bed when not in use. Which is why I went with the turnover ball in the first place with the intention of using the adaptor to 5th. Colibert makes the best adaptor in my opinion. I sold the one I had on ebay for a little over 200. So if you get one, check ebay and save a few bucks.
Sounds like the economic choice would be to get the adaptor. I really liked it on the smaller trailer, probably would work just fine on the new trailer as well. I really think the Colibert Enterprise is the best one. It was the only at the time I bought that was rated at 30K lbs, it was easy to put on as well. Like stated before, it just made me a little concerned with the larger trailer.
How easy, or rather "fast" is it to hook up the adapter to a kingpin? I'm still debating over which way to go- I can get a good used Reese 15K 5er for usually less than $150, and the Draw Tite "base rail mount kit part#6005/6007" will go for $99 on etrailer. I'm thinking maybe I can (I wouldn't say jerry rig) either weld the mount tab on or run the 1" bolt holding my goose frame on through the mount tab and that will suffice for a sturdy rail mount. It'll be cheaper than a new adapter. Input??
I have seen many a gooseneck trailers with a kingpin welded on. I think that is what you are referring to. So yes it can be done, as you know the down fall of the 5th plate is you are limited in the tilt side to side. Most hitches have enough to cover most situations but the articulation is not as good as a goose.
Some fifth wheel hitches are a "rocker" design - still not as much side to side as a goose neck - but the one I have is sufficient for my needs. Sometimes I'd get a little binding with the regular 5er hitch.
Actually, what I meant was, is it possible to "piggy-back" the 5th wheel frame mounting tabs to the gooseneck frame currently bolted to the truck frame? My goose frame is held to the truck frame by a big a$$ 1" bolt in the rear, and a 1/2" bolt on the front, both sides. Can I drill and mount the 5th mount frame tabs to my existing goose mount? I'm tryin' not to confuse anyone LOL...
