5th Wheel and '98 F150 v6

Hi guys. The wife and I are getting into BBQ competitions and I'm wanting to get a small 5th Wheel trailer (so the wife will be comfortable at comps). My smoker is trailer mounted. Due to state laws, I can't do double bumper pull so I'm going to have to do a 5th wheel trailer. Will my little 4.2l v6 be able to handle a 5th wheel and the smoker? If so, how big of 5th wheel can I go? I would like to go with a 20' - 24' unit as that will provide enough room for us.

Most towing will be in-state so I won't be going really far.

Thanks for the help.

i guess it all comes down to the weight that you want to pull. what setup is your truck? rear gears, auto or standard, cab, bed. after you get me that i will get you the weight that truck is rated to pull. how much does your smoker weight? more than likely you don't have a big enough truck. but if you find a light weight 5ver and your smoker don't wiegh much it might be doable

Just picked up an F250 for a fifth wheel camper. Previously had a Silverado with an 5.3 but the problem you will have is the pin wieght. Figure 20% of trailer weight, add wife/hitch/cooler and you will be over your payload in no time.
May want to consider upgrading.

yes, and no. there are some old 5th wheels that are light. there is a guy on this site that has one that he pulls w/ a ranger. the normal 5th wheel would be to much, but if he can find one of those small 5th wheels it would be doable. but stepping up to a 250 would be a good idea. what engine did you get in your 250?

I got a 5.4L in the 250, looked around and felt the engine was a good match for my needs.
First FORD ever, had always been diehard Chevy but did not like the new 6.0L and the change to drums in the rear.
So far I am impressed and happy with my choice

i like mine too. there are lots of people that say the 5.4 is not enough engine to tow with, but i don't have any problems towing my 5th wheel. good move to the ford from chevy, best thing you could have done lol
