I just picked up this motor from a guy, Its an FE but can't determe what it is. the guy i got the motor from says its a cj-428. I guess i if any body tell me how i can identifi a cj-428 from any other?
First off check the casting number on the crank. 1U or 1UA is a 428 crank. The cobrajet will also have en extra rib in the main webbing area. The bore should be at least 4.13". The casting numbers are on the passenger side of the block but can only tell you if it is possibly a 428. 428's are rare so check it out ASAP so you can give this thing back if he lied to you.
You can check on the back of the block, driver's side to tell if it is at least a 428 block. There will be a letter that's looks like it was welded in, an "A" would be a regular 428 and a "C" would be a CJ 428 block.
428 CJ heads are C8OE-6090-N and the intake is C8OE-9425-C.
If motor is complete checking stroke is the easiest way to determine if it could be a 428. If it has the right stroke it is at least a 410, very cool if it is. 3.984" stroke determines 410 or 428. remove spark plug use a dowel rod ora straight piece of coat hanger. Put dowel in spark hole. turn engine 'til dowel is at highest point. mark with a marker at the edge of the spark plug hole. Turn crank to lowest point then mark in same manner as first. Pull dowel and measure. That will tell you the stroke length.
what is the chance that it is a 390 with 428 heads. Form what my dad and i have looked the inside and out and haven't found any identifcation that the block is a 428 it more looks like my 390 block that we have compared it to there the same exept on the back of the block facing it on the top left just below where the head would be there is rectangle flat spot with a block number or somthing the number is 8k24850. the heads have a 8 bolt pattern for the exhaust the casting numbers is c8ae-h. the crank casting number 3u . from we've read the number for the 428 is 1u or 1ua. We finaly came to the concluion that the might be a gt 390. what do you think? Thankyou, sled_man4ever
If it is a true 428 take out a freeze plug and in the hole 428 should be casted into it on the side. I read this in a book so it should be true. All true 428s have it.
I don't think youare getting a 428 or a 390 gt. I feel you are looking at a standard 390, and possibly a montage of parts for a Standard 390. C8ae-h heads were common heads, they are the same a s D2te-aa heads, except they have no hardened exhuast seats, otherwise they are identical. CJ heads would have 16 exhuast bolts, and 390 GT heads should have 14 exhuast bolt holes. 3u crank is out of a 73-76 truck. 8k24850 is the date your block was cast, it is Oct. 24, 1968. Unfortunatly this all adds up to a 390, least IMHO.
Scotty nailed it, it's a plain ol' 390. The GT's were fairly doggy from the factory. But after carb/intake/cam/headers/ignition, they woke up and started eating chevelles for lunch, not to mention chargers in San Francisco, hehehe
