1968 428

we have a 1968galaxie Qcode that came with a 428. the guy we got it off of took the engine out for his pulling truck. hes not sure if it was the orginal 428 or not. it has C8AE-H heads on it but i couldnt read the block casting number, and the flexplate was gone. i know its not a cj motor because of the heads. but looking at a ford engine parts book it only lists part numbers for 66-67 standard 410-428cranks. and 68-69PI and cj cranks. could this motor be a 428PI?

yeah it could be, i think the old books said those heads were used, which are just standard units.

Crank was the same for the standard and PI 428 engines. The 1U crank was the one from 66-68. After that or replacements would have been the 1UB. It should be stamped on the edge of the counterweight. Look at the back of your block for a sandscratch A or S. You can also look for heavy duty cranksaddle and webbing areas inside the block. Heads are plain jane standard issue.

its sitting complete in a guys garage so i think the only way to really find out is check the casting numbers on the side of the block.

Block casting numbers are mostly generic. Meaning you can find the same casting number on different bore blocks. Many books and online sources have copied and re copied info with many errors that get repeated in new publications. So for the block it's best to measure the bore, gap the cyl wall cores and look for any sandscratches on the rear bulkhead that point to a 428. JMO.....

Well My Memory isnt what it used to be even a few weeks ago..But as FFR428 (Glenn) said look at the back of the block for a sand scratched X or A or C in the back... The early motors have been jacked with so much..you really wont know what you have until its torn down..and yes the "H" heads are plain janes...Nothing special..

And the crank if its ever been re-ground should have numbers stamped on the throw as 010 or 020 or 030... or a set of 010-010 0r 010-020 for rod throws and mains being under ground.. But some Hack machinist dont mark them..Better one's do...

If you do have a nice 428 there... depending on what you want it to do...?? It would make a nice addition to a F100...Depending on what kinda cash you want to throw at it!!

And if you just want to rebuild all Iron....Depnding on what the cylinders look like ? you might get away with a power hone.. and a new set of rings and bearings...timing set..I'd put a gasket matched ported set of C4AE-G heads on it..an edelbrock RPM intake...Or a Modded holley street Dommie intake..a set of headers.. A mid .500" lift Comp Hyd Cam...with a 750 holley..and run it like you stoled it!! Nice and cheap runner!! JMO.. I'am probably missing some small details ..But you get the jest!!

34 years ago, I had a '66 T-Bird Town Landau with a Q engine. It's nothing more than the stock 428 4V used in 1966/70 passenger cars.

You cannot go by casting numbers on 1965 and later 352/360/390/410/428 blocks....because all were cast as 352's.

Only when these blocks were finished...could they be something else.

Someone finds a C7ME block in a 1967 428 P/C, then assumes ALL C7ME blocks are this same engine. They are not.

The C8AZ-6049-M (C8AE-H) non T/E head was used thru 1971.

Ford replaced the previous cylinder heads used from 1965 thru 1967 with the C8AZ-M head, so...it's possible to find a 1965 Galaxie 352 with these heads on it.

Ford had authorized rebuilders across the US that acquired 1000's of these heads, then stuck them on all manner of FE engines.

Since 1948, Ford has updated 10's of 1000's of part numbers every year.

This is what you will see in the 1965/72 car parts catalog for 428 crankshafts:

C9ZZ6303A .. " 1UA " / 1969 B & F 428 Super CJ / Use before 12/26/1968.

C9ZZ6303D .. " B " / 1969/70 B & F 428 Super CJ / Use after 12/26/68.

C9ZZ6303B .. " 1UB " / 1966/68 ALL / 1969/70 A & P/C / 1969 B & F (CJ) / Use before 12/26/1968.

C9ZZ6303E .. " A " / 1969/70 B & F (CJ) / Use after 12/26/1968.

Is C9ZZ-B the original part number? No.

A = Galaxie/LTD / B = Fairlane/Torino / CJ = Cobra Jet / F = Mustang / P/C = Police Cruiser / T/E = Thermactor Emission (smog pump).

People go ga-ga over FE block and head casting numbers here on FTE, but these numbers don't mean diddly-squat!
