i dont know much about 428's but im looking into buying a boat that has a 428 in it. Is a 428 a cobra jet or is the cj a special 428 and is the block different between the cj and non cj. Also does the cj have a lot of low end torque (or can it)?
The standard 428 has lower torque curve and used standard 390/428 heads where as the CJ uses larger heads & valves. The CJ's torque curve is higher and is better at revving higher. I think the CJ blocks have more support in the main webbing but this extra webbing is also found in the 390/391 FT truck blocks and some service replacement blocks.
I've never seen torque and HP curves for standard vs. CJ 428s. The only real differences I'm aware of are the bigger valves and better breathing heads in the CJ, different cames, as well as the extra webbing at the base of the block that karljay referred to. I would think that any reduction in low-end torque in the CJ would be pretty minimal. The additional cost of a CJ generally isn't worth it for boats and trucks, though, as the real gains from the better breathing are in the upper rpm ranges.
I thought the 1969 428 SCJ used the Lemans rods and had an additional balance weight added to the crank spacer on the front of the engine. There was also some additional webbing on the main bearing supports.
