Trucks don't need 500 hp. 200-300 is plenty for a truck of just about any size. Torque 500-600 is ideal, again for just about any truck large or small. My 7.3 is incredibly reliable and has none of the problems that owners here on the forum claim are normal issues. I change the oil and put diesel in it and it runs. No smoke, no slipping transmission, turbo looks new, etc. Just leave it as it was designed, and be amazed at how long it will last.
What trucks need is more gears. A 200hp engine can pull plenty with the right transmission. I would rather see Ford not play the hp game and have the PSD with 250-300hp, 500 ft/lbs tq, with an 8 or 10 speed transmission.
Yeah and we used to have low hp big trucks with lots of gears and they were still dogs. They'd pull anything but they were in no hurry to do so.
I've run both a 1987 Mack with 250hp and an 8LL and a 1996 Peterbilt with a 425 CAT with an 8LL and I can tell you that the Peterbilt burnt less fuel, ran cleaner (less smoke), and was better to drive. The Mack gets it done every day, but the Peterbilt did the same and was arguably safer because when you were merging onto a highway you could actually MATCH the speed of traffic and not be trying
merge with 70+mph traffic at 30.
And all of that is a moot point because Andrew isn't building his truck to pull his camper and his boat to go see his grandkids or go see his geriatric specialist. He's building a race truck and a Cummins is the better option when looking for performance.
I agree, planning on doing the convo myself, been a long time since I have been on the forum and then stumbled upon this thread. After reading 14 pages im hooked, I need more info!!!

I have been down on work so money is tight at the moment. I am planning a trip in January to visit with zack @ Hamilton cams. That trip should yield some goodies.
I can snap a pic of it sitting outside my shop if that makes you guys happy. Or I got a 180kw diesel generator for sale that sure would get the project revitalized.

I look forward to seeing it on the road as I have followed your thread for quite a while. A big project and I can't imagine the labor hours from start to finish! I considered such a project a while ago but decided not to after looking at parts cost and labor time. So, I did a %100 conversion project which took a lot less time....went from the Ford truck to an all Cummins/Dodge
I know you will love the switch to the Cummins platform as much as I did. Good luck and I look forward to more status soon!
Thanks for the kind words guys.. work is picking back up and I'm hoping to get the short block in to the machinist.. Gotta get some H11 studs and a girdle ready. Then machine and coat the pistons..
Then I gotta sell my soul for the cash to build my cylinder head.
ohh.. and we have decided to build a new shop.. 80x120 w/ 18ft eves... in floor heat.. loft up top to live right above my projects... mmmmmmmmm
