I've always removed and installed my transmission and transfer case as an assembly. Long travel floor jack and a collection of blocks & stands make it possible to do safely if you are careful. If the truck is on a flat, smooth surface you can roll it forward by hand between each lowering increment to get it clear of the converter bolts and starter. Takes a little patience but it can be done. Usually I'm doing well to have the transmission down in about 4-6 hours.
You might not be able to get the transmission to clear the frame when you pull it sideways out from under the truck. I had to still lift my truck slightly at the front corner to clear, but then again, mine is 2wd so you might not have that problem.
one thing that was weird is when i took the lines off no fluid came out, iirc fluid should come out.the trans fluid was full when i drained it.dont they drain from the converter?
I'm not positive but I think some converters might not have a drain. I can't remember if I ever had fluid pouring out of the cooling ports on mine in a case like this. Problem is I ususally drained it first....
If you keep it upright I don't think a lot will pour out.
I pulled my stepdad's NV4500 w/ its transfercase attached out of his 1-ton GM. After looking at the IDI, I think I can just slide my entire setup backwards enough to change the clutch and RMS. Maybe I'm missing something here. Getting it back in might be more difficult.
It might be a good idea to replace those bolts. Heat and vise grips should get them out. Or weld a nut on the end of the bolts. I hate it when fasteners get munged up.
