Tranny I.D.

How can I tell the diff between the 4 Speeds that Ford used. I've found 4 different 4 speeds so far. The T-18, T-19A, T-19C, NP 435, and TOD. If the tranny is sitting on the ground, not in a truck, what are the distinguishing characteristics? I don't like to rely on the I.D. tags because they can be easily changed. I want a 4 speed with a low first, the 435 seems to be the best bet. I know little about the T-18, T-19. Did the 19 come with small blocks? Sorry for the barrage of questions, but I am looking for any and all knowledge on the subject. Thanks for any help.

Rob

I know the 435s usually have a very large shifter with many bends, and very long throws between gears.
