check the linkage at the transmission to see that the selector is going all the way to "park".

And then when you get it fixed realize that it's a parking brake and not an "E-brake" I always set the brake before shifting to park on everything I won. Why make the transmission take all the abuse of holding the weight of the vehicle when you have brakes to do that!

Sorry, not trying to critisize you, just see a lot of folks abusing their trans by never using the brake.

most of the parking brakes are junk and will fall off or lockup in 5 years. If your cable still pulls the brake without dragging and screwing up your discs, your one of the lucky ones... i keep my "e-brakes" in the dumpster at the bottom of the driveway!

Whatever works for you, have fun replacing that parking pawl in your trans. I don't know what kind of abuse you encounter to make them (park brakes) break, but mine is still working fine on my 1965 impala, 1979 F-150, 1987 F-250, 2004 Honda Element and 2001 Sport trac. Maybe it's because I actually use them instead of lettting them rust solid.

Did you never wonder why you get that big clunk when you park on a hill and then go to leave and pull the trans outta park? That's a lot of pressure on a tiny little metal finger inside your transmission. After spending over a decade rebuilding engines and transmissions you'll not convince me otherwise. I could always tell when I pulled a trans apart if they used the brakes or not.

Of course you're more than welcome to your opinion.

Yep, no immediate help, just trying to help you from having this issue on down the road and perhaps help others from having it ever. didn't mean to offend if I did.
