Thanks, tbm3fan! It doesn't look like it would be too hard to fab up one of those using the old one as a pattern. Now I just need to figure out exacly where it's located & how to get at it. Help anyone?
You have to take the wheel off and then the housing on which your shift indicator sits on top of as it is screwed into the back of it. Page 385 of Section B of the Ford Parts CD.
I was asked by 66CustomCab about a picture of the shift detent which wears down and allows an auto to move from Park to Reverse.
Hey Mike, can you clarify that part number on the package....the flash makes a couple of the numbers hard to read. Thanks! I think I need one of these too.
Yep,
I need one of these too...I'm guessing they are completely obsolete...Green Sales etc?
Was it the C-4 tranny that did this or all the early transmissions? Obviously, someone
would need a new one to fab them. Where is it located in the transmission-?
This detent is bolted to the lower section of the steering column flange (flange is below the steering wheel, above the shift collar). The shift lever has a tab on it that fits into the detent.

Hey Jason, this is more of a steering column issue than trans. As ND said, this detent is located in the shift collar on the steering column just below the steering wheel. Your truck probably originally had a cruise-o-matic trans and "drive" was the green dot. The green dot is in a different position on the indicator than "D" on the later columns/trans such as your C4. All that to say that it's possible that some of your problem could be related to the different trans attached to the cruise-o-matic column.....just a thought..

Randy, since the shift lever's tab fits into the detent, the detent is located above the shift collar, not in the shift collar itself.
