Hey all, new to this forum. I have a 99 f350 with a 7.3, 4 in lift with 35x12.5x16 Procomp Xtreme AT's that came with the truck but I am looking for a new set of tires. I do a fair amount of highway driving so it would be nice if they didn't wear out too fast but I don't care about tire noise or vibration. I have heard great things about the Yokohama Geolander MTs but I was also looking at the Nitto trail grapplers but I have heard mixed reviews about this tire. What are you guys using on your trucks and how do you like them?

 

You're gonna get mixed reviews on any tire. On a truck as heavy as ours there obviously not going to last as long as a prius tire. A friend of mine swears by Toyo a/t. I've heard good things about Toyo m/t too. A LOT of the guys in the 7.3 woods love the trail grapplers. I myself have 38x15.5 mud grapplers but my truck is not a DD and im not too worried about getting 60k miles out of them. I also had trxus sts tires they were great until there was anything close to deep mud or snow.

Your best bet is to be honest with yourself when it comes to getting tires. Are you gonna do 99% highway driving and 1% playing in a puddle. If so an a/t tire will do you just fine. And really how well can an 8000 pound truck do in the mud......... Go ahead....... Ask me..... I know

i am running cooper AT3's on all my trucks now 285/75/16's load range E
very good road manners, quiet, but aggressive enough to get my 8700 lb trucks through anything i have put them in so far.

 

I like the cooper STTs great mileage and good traction. Same as the Toyo MT but half the price.

 

SSR Boggers. only thing thats good. or ag tires if its strictly offroad tho.

 

On a small light truck sure thell last but you'll never get 40+ thousand out of them and still be able to be safe..... I have a set on my grand cherokee and at 35k there trash. I will say that the wife and I do absolutely love the tires though. There one of the best all around tires I've ever had. For a 8000 pound truck it will eat through them in no time and I don't recommend them for his application

 

You got that backwards.. i had a set of 33s on my ranger picked em up with 80-85% tread and they were gone in like 30k The set on my 79 has 53k on them. Set on our old ranch truck has like 45k on them and about 6/32s. My experience working at les schwab, the STT /MTs like the heavier trucks better. 60k out of them on CC/LB diesels seems to be the norm.

 

I like my Goodyear duratracs, they don't last along time on the highway though. I have them on my 97 f150 an when i was DD they wore fast. But when i get in deep mud while in the woods they pulled there *** off.

 

You'll like the Trail Grapplers. I loved them on my Excursion and they were rated for 4000 pounds a tire in a 295/70/18. I sold the truck with 10,000 miles on them and they hadn't even started showing signs of wear yet. My favorite thing about them was the "Made In USA" stamped on the sidewall.

 

"Your Mileage May Vary".........General rule, the better it works off road in deep mud, the worse it works on pavement, especially wet or icy pavement. The better it works on the highway under varied weather conditions and delivers 50K miles or better, the worse it does off road under rough conditions. If you rotate tires at proper intervals, and run tires at proper pressures for your load, and buy tires that suit your application, you will have the best service life.....On my Dodge, i had a set of 285/70/17 Pro Comp AT"s ( not the Extremes, just the regular AT's) and i got almost 50K, before i blew one out and decided to replace them all. the other 3 had maybe a couple thousand miles left....Im now living in an area that has a lot of Les Schwab stores, and i went with a set of Wild Country tires, these were a 10 ply, and the Pro Comps were only an 8 ply....I had NO complaints about the Pro Comps

 

I am very happy with my Toyo Open Country MTs. They are an "E" rated tire, good for a heavy diesel. For a mud tire, they run very smooth on the road. Off road, they really shine. I can take my truck a lot of places for how big and heavy she is.

 

I've heard a lot of people love to toyo open country MTs. Unfortunately there aren't any places in my area that sell them in the size I am looking for. What about the hankook dynapro mt? I've heard if they are made in the us then they are good but they are trash if they are made in China or japan. Is this true?

 

Hankook tires are made in South Korea. Good tires by most accounts.

 

I ran into the same problem. I'm not close to anything... small town in NW Indiana. I go to Indy for my VA appts. Drove over to 4 Wheel Parts while I was down there and had to order mine. I wasn't in a hurry. Very happy with them.

 

I just run decent all season tires and use chains if I need more traction.
