I bought my truck in March, been driving it ever since have had few problems... The other day I got in it and was driving home from work and it started vibrating pretty badly. But it would only vibrate over 40 miles per hour and only when I hit the gas. I am stumped. Anyone have any ideas...?
I have the same problem with my 79 f100 2wd. but for the most part, the steering wheel shakes back and forth only when i hit the brakes, if im doing over 30mph...I thought it might have been ball joints, but i cannot find them anywere for 2wd, only 4wd. Do the 2wd's have ball joints? Could it be tie rod ends?
I recently had the shakes between 40 and 50 mph on acceleration. Crawled under the truck, and the double cardan on my drive shaft was too hot to touch. Unfortunately there wasn't much I could do, since the PO felt it was necessary to weld the u-joint caps in. Just had to fork over the dough to have a new drive shaft built, needed to have it lengthened for a lift anyway. I would check out your u-joints, and cardan (if applicable) for smoothness in rotation, and rear end for play.
I had a similar problem and it ended up being a bad tire. I thought I had looked at them good, but there was a small bulge that was very difficult to see until you got the tire off the truck.
Is it 40mph no matter what gear the tranny is in, including neutral?
We'll need to know if it's ENGINE speed or ROAD speed the vibration occurs.

it seems to be no matter what gear the tranny is in. But 3rd and 4th gear are the worse. and its only if i am actually have my foot on the gas. but it doesn't do it in neutral... i really have no idea what it is...
Sounds like a clutch problem. Either the actual clutch or the input bushing.

It ended up being a u joint...the only reason i know this is because it snapped and my drive shaft fell out while i was driving. i took the drive shaft out in the middle of the road and limped back to my house in four wheel drive, on the plus side no more vibration.
next question... is there anyway i can make sure my drive shaft is still straight on my own...???
