November 2010 - General Chat Thread!
Hey Joe, make sure you have your grunt call. I called in a young 8pt last night..............3 times...LOL!!! He would go away, then I would call and he would come back. I think he was trying to commit suicide.
I would rather save those bucks for my 11 year old twins that are hunting with me. Tomorrow my son is going to be packin' his new Scoped Ruger 77/44, and I'll have the 44 mag pistol and my bow.
Since my time is so limited these days and I'm a meat hunter...first deer with bone on his head buys the farm!
...plus I get back on a plane Sunday afternoon...so...
My buddy did tell me that he's been seeing more than a few 1.5 year old bucks tromping thru by the stand I'm crawling in...so we'll see...
Looks to be a warmer day tomorrow...If I am unsuccessful in the morning...my 11 year old daughter wants to sit with me in a two person stand we have on the property in the afternoon...
Good luck to you and your kids tomorrow!...if I shoot anything...I'll post a picture up on here.
Joe.

I bought 4 buddy stands last year at Rural King/Wal-mart after season at a good discount, keep your eyes open for the sales if you need more. I think I like the 17ft'ers better. We now have 5 set up so I should be able to move the 2 kids around a bit and keep the deer on their toes......hooves....

I'm a meat hunter too, but not hungry enough to harvest young bucks. It's never a problem to put some does in the freezer.....but definately when time is very limited you got to take what you can..........my kids on the other hand will be harvesting the first thing we get close which is awesome!! My daughter took a doe last year and it was her first harvest and we are getting it mounted because they are a trophy as well! I've got some nice bucks on the wall but I can gaurantee I would take her first harvest as my besrt memory and most fun ever!!!
She was so proud when we were eating her deer at the table, she said, "I provided for the family"....I said yes you have, and now you've finally earned you're chance to sleep in the house.

I'm heading out here in a few to go sit in my tree stand...good luck to all the other people out there (nebo and his kids included) who are chasing some venison for the freezer today!...
Nebo...GREAT story from your daughter...she SHOULD be proud!
Joe.
I sat all morning and only saw a doe and fawn...the doe was nice size but I knew that if I didn't get one in the morning my youngest daughter would be sitting in the afternoon with me...so I passed on the doe that was 20 yards away...and I'm glad I did.
My wife brought my daughter to the land and we dressed for the hunt...here's a quick picture.
We sat in a blind on the edge of a cut corn field. We had deer around us most of the afternoon and about 3-4 turkeys too...so the first time my youngest sat with me was eventful in just seeing deer...which is good.
So about 5pm we see a buck come busting thru the woods in the lead of about 8-9 doe's and they are running away from us!
...but then for whatever reason the buck stops does a 180 and goes back to the edge of the woods and the doe's continue running...we're in a pop up blind about 80 yards away and I have some scrub brush between me and him...but I am able to get a scope on him and I tell her to plug her ears and she does...he is standing broadside and I squeeze one off...he piles up where he stood! The rain starts and it is beginning to start to get dark...by the time my buddy gets there with the truck I've got him drug to the edge of pop up and we snap this photo...
While he isn't a trophy by any stretch...he is my trophy because my little girl was there with me on her first hunt sitting with dad...I'm sure that is something she will always remember...I know I will!...this will be one of those happy place memories I will go to as this11 year old turns into a dreaded teen!
... seriously what an experience as a dad!!! I have shot well over 30 deer in my lifetime and this one has to be #1 for me even ahead of my first deer which happened to be with a bow no less but I didn't even get that until I was 27 or so back in Jersey!!!
I explained to her that most of the times you sit and see NOTHING...so don't get used to shooting everytime!

Hope everyone had a great Saturday...I know I did!
Joe.
