Question valve lash adjustment

Ok I'm trying to find info on valve lash adjustment on my 223 l6 from a 1960 F250...

So the big question is while I have the time to do it at this point does anyone have the specs on these adjustments for this motor?? I really need to get a book but I don't want to wait to get this adjusted...

do you warm it up and then run the feeler guage between the valve spring seat and the rocker, when the valve is fully closed? if so mine are all approximatly .028 and that seems a bit loose to me... on another thread a kid with a 215 said .014min .016max... but that's a different motor, Is it the same for the 223?

Thank you for any help,
Joe

Oh haha, thank you very much indybeer!!! That's a lot of good info there! i had just found a site (the old car manual project) that had the same specs for a 58 223 which I figured was the same so your info just reassured me!

Thanks again!
Joe

Just so we're clear, the valve spring seat is where the valve spring sits in the head, so it'd take a reeealy big feeler gauge to measure that gap. ;-)
The feeler gauge goes between the rocker and valve tip, and you measure that with the cam turned so the lifter is completely centered on the lobe heel, where the "lift" portion is pointing 180 degrees from the lifter. If you're going to make a habit of checking and adjusting your valves, and it sounds like a good idea, ou may want to invest in a go-no go feeler gauge. It has steps on the blade, so the blade you'd use would be a size .018/.020. When you're adjusted correctly, the .018 side is sloppy, but the .020 portion won't fit at all.
