I have a 2001 F250 with the 7.3 which seems to have a "ticking" noise. A friend said I needed to have the top end valve lash ran. That this was something the Dodge Cummins engines required all the time. But in research on this site I could not find anything on this subject.
Do these engines require their valve lash adjusted? If so, anyone have the steps/clearances required?
Well almost everything uses hydraulic lifters, but the rockers are pedestal mount. Meaning there's no adjustment in them compared to a stud mount rocker arm. Only way to adjust is to place a shim under the pedestal, or machine the pedestal. But you won't be doing that on a stock engine. I have read here where people have found a few slightly loose and retorqued the bolts. And while they're there they do the 50 cent mod and retorque the injector bolts too. One day I need to pull the valve covers off and do the same. I have no idea if the PO did the UVCH fix or not.
Loose injectors, type of oil, type or amount of fuel additive, regular diesel vs. biodiesel will change the way your engine sounds. As mentioned, there's no lash adjustment on these motors. Re-torquing things will quite down the motor and is worth the time and effort.
You don't need to roll the motor before checking torque on the rockers or injectors. And temp doesn't really matter either. Warm or cold will work just fine.
