how to disconnecting door chime
I need to disconnect the door chime -- I've looked in searches and archives and can't find any help.
There are some threads on disconnecting the key in ignition chime but nothing on the door is open chime.
I use my '96 E-150 for my landscaping business and have the doors open all the time for tool access.
Come to think of it, disconnecting the dome lights would be good too.
I would have thought this is a common question? Do most guys put up with that chime? Maybe it's just too simple a solution?
I cry uncle. Help, please.

Splice a simple switch into the wiring for the door switch so you can make the door appear to be closed. This will trick out the chime AND the courtesy lights. You'll have to check a Haynes manual wiring diagram to find out which wires to put the switch in and how to connect it, but it can't be hard.

If you are talking about when you have the keys in or the lights on when you open the door then there used to be just a box that plugged into your under dash fuse box or wiring harness from the firewall. That was where it was at on my old 94 ranger and an 85 Chevy. You just unplug it and that little annoying sound goes away.

Thanks guys, for the input. I'm not sure what I'll do,except maybe unscrew/remove the dome lights.
The one that really steams me is the chime that starts ringing as soon as the door is open--what the hell is that.
No key is in, no light is on just the door open -- I think the designers are getting a bit too over-the-top with this kind of OK (overkill) construction.
If I knew it would work I'd just hit the speaker/module/anything related with a big hammer.

On my 93 F-150, there is a white rectangle-shaped plug under the dash below the steering column. I unplugged this & the chime was disabled. I don't know if the 96 van would be the same but it's worth a look. As for the dome light, I agree that a switch could be installed fairly easily. Also, my factory driver's side switch for the dome light went bad. Now I just use my headlight switch to turn on my dome light. Maybe you could just unplug the factory door switches to disable the dome light. You could turn on the light with the headlight switch when needed. I don't know. This may cause the lights to stay on all the time. It might be worth trying though. I hope this helps.

My '96 service CD says the Bk/Pk wire from the steering column should ONLY be grounded if the key is in, so check that. The van RKE module is different from the truck one in several ways, so don't try to swap them. I just added the '96 van chime diagram to this album. Let me know if you need the RKE, but it has nothing to do with the chime other than the one wire shown.

Well I took a long look and listen with a trouble light, under the dash. No luck.
'1993F', I think the van has a different set up, I couldn't find any obvious plug to pull.
steve83, thanks for the diagram -- sorry for the wrong info. -- it's a '94 van (Chateau). Had a hard time reading that plan -- any tricks to it?

hotest rod, chimes in my 97f150 xlt were working fine. About the 3rd time i pulled the factory buckets to steam clean the carpets, i accidentally pulled the wire out from bottom of drivers seat. Ever since then, the door chimes sound when the door is opened. Wire going into the bottom of seat has seperated. Maybe your problem as well (possibly caused by a foot or flashlight or whatever crammed up underneath the drivers seat and the wire was pullled loose).

03f150man I think you're right. The chime has stopped coming on when I open the door now -- maybe because I pulled some stuff out from under the seat.
Now I'd still like to kill that chime for keys in ignition.
Thanks for the tip. Lots to learn about these wonderful rigs!

Here is a simple way to disable the key chime (leaves light chime intact). Remove the steering column shroud. Turn key one position forwards from lock. Use a pin to push the release and pull out the key tumbler. Remove the switch.(pics) Tape it up and put everything back together. Leave the switch up under the column cover.
