Post Proper procedure for trans fluid change

I have found the proper procedure to change the engine oil and filter in the tech folder, but not the trans fluid. I need to change my trans fluid aswell as the torque converters fluid. Does anyone have the step by step process for this.

It has to be hot flushed with the proper equipment to remove the old fluid in the torque converter. Some people including myself just drain the 8-9 quarts out of the pan and replace it every 15,000 miles. The filter under the bumper should be changed at 30,000 I change mine every 15,000 when I drain the pan.

Good info!

Don't forget that the tranny takes close to 18 quarts of fluid all together, so even though changing the 8-9 quarts what you can drain out , it is not the same as the hot flush.
Oh, and almost forget : MERCON SP only!!!

Please explain " the hot flush", I let Jiffy Lube do mine w/ there machine that sucks out the bad and puts in the new, the stipulation was that I was standing there the whole time watching. Is the hot flush similar.

Edit- I also made them use the Mercon SP I got at the dealership.

This is why your changing every 15 thousand with half the amount of the capacity. When your changing the external filter the magnet on top of the spring should be wiped clean of all metal particles that it collects. Also clean the inside of the canister before reinstalling.

It's the same EXCEPT it heats the fluid so that the internal thermostat will be open and allow flow to the cooler lines. If the thermostat cools below 165°F the thermostat closes and 90% of the flow stays inside the trans instead of going to the flush machine. That just mixes old and new fluids instead of changing them.

Just dump 7 quarts and add 7 more MERCON SP every 5,000 miles...can't go wrong. Approx $70 a year and you can do it yourself.

I hope the Ford dealer is not charging you $10 a quart, 7 qt.X $10= $70

No....I get it from a Dealer distributor for $5 qt....since it takes 7 qts per 5K dump/fill (approx twice each year...depends on mileage) 14 qts x $5 = $70 per year. Hope this cleared that up. Moral to the story...you can do it yourself...why pay labor? Sure its not the same as a heated flush...but since you're cycling the fluid with new every 5K....it maintains the special "SP" friction package. I just add that I change the external filter every 30K and the internal every 60K. I'm also going to change to the '08 pan and filter at some point.

So let me get this straight. I don't have to completely change the trans fluid to keep it working at it's peak. I am willing to do a partial change of my trans fluid every 10K with filter if this works just as well.

That's right...although at some point you might opt to add the newer pan/filter for better filtration.

The heated flush will always be better than just a partial fluid replacement. How much better - who can say. It will certainly depend on the individual condition of each persons transmission. The end result of wear and abrasion (particles) promotes accelerated wear and abrasion. The filter in the transmission pan is just a screen. Hard to imagine it plugging up.
