I am close to starting my engine (351) for the first time and was wondering how to determine the proper fluid level in the AOD trans. I have put in 3 quarts of fluid but I think it would need more, Should it be warmed up , in neutral or drive, at idle or some other rpm? What is the correct procedure? Thanks
According to my trany guy who rebuilt my AOD he said 10qts and recomended Pennsoil multi ATF.
I would think you'd want to put at least 80% of the oil prior to starting
Assuming that you have a rebuilt trans with a new/rebuilt torque convertor, you will need to engage the front pump on the trans to get the fluid from the pan to the torque convertor. This will require the engine to be running.
That is of course unless you prefilled the torque converter.
The specifications show that an unfilled torque converter takes 6 1/2 quarts. The total capacity of the transmission and torque converter is 12.3 quarts.
If you didn't prefill the torque converter when you installed it, put 8 quarts of fluid in the transmission prior to start. Once it is started, shift the transmission through all the gears slowly then back to park - do this two or three times. (remember if this is a new engine to check to see if you need the 20 minute cam break-in run on the first start up - if so let it run in park for the 20 minutes.).
Turn it off and add 3 more quarts and start the truck up again shifting through all the gears (for about 20 seconds each) then back to park. Allow the engine and transmission to warm up to operating temp
After the truck is warm, put it in PARK, remove and wipe the dipstick and by adding a PINT (that's half a quart) at a time, continue to add and check the fluid level until it is just at the full level. DO NOT OVER FILL IT! you can come back after a few miles and recheck/add if need be!
Depending on the size of your transmission cooler, it may take another pint or two over the 12.3. But, like I said, underfill then bring it up slowly so you don't overfill it!
