'94 Explorer factory, but unusual Anti-theft
Hi,
I checked the "sticky" at the top and did an extensive search, but could not find an answer to my problem.
A little backround info..................
the truck is a 1994 Ford Explorer XLT. The driver's side window has the black & silver sticker that says "Protected by Ford Anti-theft system", and has the Ford logo on it. There are no indicator lights, LEDs, or Valet buttons anywhere in the truck. The lights and horn are not part of this anti-theft system.
The original Ford remote FOB that came with the truck only has 2 buttons (lock and unlock). There is no panic button. Previous owner said the truck came this way from factory.
Regardless of unlocking the truck with either the remote or key, the truck will not crank unless you hit the remote button first.
If you turn the truck off and sit there without opening the door, you can hear several "clicks" coming from behind the dash.
Here's the problem..........
The truck won't start without the remote. The anti-theft "box" seems to have crapped out, and now the remote won't work and truck won't start.
I know the problem is not the remote, because I got stranded today. I reached under the dash and "tapped" on stuff, and suddenly the door locks went down.
Started the truck & made it home.
I got home and it wasn't working again. tapped under dash, and locks went down again. Hit remote, and it worked fine up & down several times. Started truck and shut off. Nothing works again, including tapping under dash now.
Is this particular anti-theft module easy to eliminate? I don't know where it is located (except that it's behind the dash), and I don't know what it looks like or how it's wired.
Starting a new job on Monday, and really need to get it running. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Kenny

More info
Hi again,
Some added info that might help?
The truck is a 4x4, with 4 speed OD manual trans.
I Located the anti-theft module today. It was up behind the dash next to a black box labeled "Ford keyless entry module".
Shop manual CD shows both would be located in the rear quarter access panel under the transmission shift module, but they are not.
Anyone else hear of this? I've looked elsewhere on the net, and in every case the Anti-theft system sounds to be different than mine.
Thanks.
Kenny

Update
Thanks Steve,
Just wanted to give you an update.......
I got the truck started, and dropped it off to a friend of mine. Excellent mechanic, who really knows his Fords.
He told me that though it was a genuine Ford system, it was actually installed aftermarket.
He removed it, and only charged me $50.00.
Truck now starts without the remote, and I can use my spare key now.
Happy ending, Wooohooo!
