Anti-Theft Question

My 02 Limited has the Ford Anti-Theft System. I have not dealt with this in the past with my Fords, but with this one I have to hit the unlock button 3 times every time I want to start my rig or else it does nothing. The other day I shut it off in the drive through so the girl could hear me without the PSD , and before it would start I had to hit the unlock on the remote 3 times. It's beginning to drive me crazy. What's wrong with hitting it once and being done? Anybody heard of this before, and what can I do to turn this rediculous feature off?!

Is that with a factory key with a chip?

Never heard of that issue. I don't believe it is a factory feature.

I didn't think it was factory, either, but looked behind the fuse panel and sure enough...Ford anti-theft. Uses the factory key and key fob. Does have an aftermarket siren installed, though. This thing's got me all confused!

Kind of pointless on an Excursion. They don't get stolen unless you leave the keys in them.

Nothing wrong with the factory setup at all. 18 years in a major city PD, and I have never even heard of an Excursion getting stolen here (less than 250 miles from the Mexican border). Every other type of Ford truck gets stolen daily, but not the Excursions.

but with this one I have to hit the unlock button 3 times every time I want to start my rig or else it does nothing.
You have one of those add-on remote starts that utilize the factory remote fobs. 3X unlock triggers the remote start as the module picks up the unlock relay signal instead of having its own remote controls and radio receiver. It's supposed to be a a "convenience" feature, not a security add-on. The DEI Avatel 34003 is an example of such a system unless you have a model that does include security features (you mentioned a siren). You might poke around and see if you can find specific markings indicating specific make and model number of the module.

Yours, however, is either malfunctioning or is improperly installed such that the normal factory starting circuit isn't working.

I’m wondering if this might have been a dealer or aftermarket installed anti-theft deterrent / alarm system.

I bought a new Ford Ranger many many years ago that the dealer had pre-installed (and charged for of course) a switch that you had to turn on the parking lights before it would start. There was a small toggle switch up by the battery that deactivated the theft deterrent.

I turned it off and never used the PIA switch again…..

Guessing it might be something like that…. If it is, good luck in finding it….. Look for wiring that’s not OEM connectors would be my guess….

I was able to find some more info on this alarm. I found the control box behind the fuse panel. It is labelled as a product, but I've read that it is actually produced by Code (Audiovox) and sold/installed by the dealer with the name "system 3/system 4". I found a picture of the product using google. I still can't seem to find any kind of owner's manual for it. Apparently Ford keeps this stuff close to the vest and won't share the info.
If any of you guys can help to shed more light on this, that would be very helpful!

Yeah, I've found the same thing which is why I don't have any information of the Ford-branded add-ons.
