Shielded Spare Tire

Anyone notice the metal shield that looks like it protects the spare tire from the exhaust. I wonder if the new flow thru exhaust allows more heat to transfer down to the tail pipe.

Hot tailpipe

My neighbor has a 2012 fx4. Just put in a rubber bed mat, noticed that it is melting right above the bend where the tailpipe goes over the axle. He says that you can feel the heat radiating with your hand when you get close to that area. Ford says not a problem, nothing they can do. He is going to get a ir thermometer and check the temp. We are thinking if it is hot enough to melt the bed mat it might get hot enough to catch fire to the load (camping equipment, etc....) Wondering if you guys have heard of this yet....

Thanks

I saw the shield, but never gave it any thought until I read this thread.

Talk about thread mining. Still a nice post either way.

Well, now I'm curious what temps your neighbor saw with that IR gun.
