Is a exhaust manifold heat shield also a gasket?????

Is a exhaust manifold heat shield also a gasket?????

I bought new exhaust manifolds for 1974 f 250 with a 360 5.9.
The engine currently has heat shields on.
Do I need to install heat shield and a gasket when I put the new manifolds on or is just the heat shield or just gasket or install both?

That is a heat deflector and does not need a gasket and is not used as a gasket. It mounts to the outside of the of the manifold as you bolt on the manifold. Years ago a kid in shop class thought it mounted on the motor side of the exhaust. The teacher threatened to give every one who laughed or insulted him a zero for the week. Its a mistake that has apparently been made before. Theres no stupid questions.

Really? Then why do the heat shields mount over the exhaust ports between the heads and the exhaust manifold? Perhaps you have not seen these before. Perhaps?

We won't laugh or insult you.. we're FTE'ers after all.

I believe you are referring to an heat deflector that mounts on the outside of the passenger side exhaust manifold and has a tube that connects to the air cleaner.
I'm asking if the exhaust manifolds need a gasket and heat shield to be mounted.
The picture above is of heat shield,which I currently have.
My question is do I install a gasket along with the heat shield or just the heat shield alone.

And Hio Silver also has a rare NOS heat shield installed so his brake fluid doesnt get too hot.

Checked my trucks this morning. 78 & 79, 400 no heat deflectors, 89, 351w efi no heat deflector, 75 460 no deflector, 75 390 none on drvs side pass side has a deflector. Would have to pressume some one did work on the 390 and left it off. Most of my motors have the deflector that protects the spark plugs. I say most as its obvious a couple have been cut or broken off. My bad. 38 years ago it must have been obvious that the motor in question must have had the plug deflector and not the heat deflector in question here. Sorry for the bad info on my part.
Hio, IIRC you said a 7105 performer rpm manifold was a single plane manifold & were corrected by a poster that it was a dual plane. I guess I'm perfect like you, warts and all.
