Weird part on F-450 pickups

So what is the weird dampener looking part attached to the frame rear of the rear-most driver's side leaf hanger?

It is a damper to reduce vibration/hop of an unloaded truck when driving down the road. The F450 & up come with these do to the stiff spring rate and wheel base. This condition is generally worse on a truck with stiff suspension and a wheel base of 156" or greater.

Ford damper part # 5C3Z-5D008-A

TSB 7-5-11
FORD: 2005-2007 F-Super Duty

ISSUE:

Some 2005-2007 F-Super Duty vehicles with a long wheelbase of 156", 158", or 172" (396, 401, or 437 cm) and equipped with a trailer hitch may exhibit a vehicle vertical vibration, often described as "hopping", on smooth or coarse road surfaces in the 42-48 MPH (68-77 Km/h) speed range. Although this behavior is considered normal for an over 8500 GVW truck, some customers may be sensitive to the concern.
ACTION:

To improve the 42-48 MPH (68-77 Km/h) vertical vibration, follow the instruction sheet included in the Damper Service Kit.

NOTE: THE INSTALLATION OF THIS DAMPER WILL NOT IMPROVE RIDE ON SEGMENTED CONCRETE HIGHWAYS, STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION/SHIMMY, OR GENERAL HARSH RIDE CONCERNS.

Amazing a customer would complain about a "harsh" ride in a 26,000lb GCVWR truck. C'mon...

Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to trucks. After seeing a moonroof in a Super Duty, I wonder how long it will take before they completely emasculate them. I married a country girl and I don't get complaints when I buy a real truck or why it needs a winch.

One of the joys of being a kid was to ride in the back of my uncle's oversprung F250 while going down a dirt washboard road at speed. Kinda like the chase scene in the movie, Mr. Majestyk, with Charles Bronson.

Talking

No complaints here. I can see other people though coming on here and saying the infamous saying " I paid $45,000 ........... etc. I think i actually made the ride better when i swapped in the f350 blocks. Maybe im crazy but the hopping has decreased a little bit. I drive a GMC 5500 and an International 7400 all day. Trust me, my truck rides like a cadillac after work

Well, the TSB covers all 05-07 Super Duties, meaning even the F250s (can) have this hop problem, not just the "big boys" where you might well expect some nasty ride issues. My '06 F350 exhibited this problem from the day I drove it off the dealer's lot. It happens on even the smoothest pavement. If you had the problem, believe me, you would NOT like it and would want it fixed, if it could be. Note that the '08 models now have longer rear leaf springs, no doubt to address the problem. Anyways, been 3 times to the dealer for the problem, this last time they finally had the TSB to tell me about, but guess what? They read the line about it being a "normal condition for this vehicle" and I guess didn't read any farther, because they sent me away with a "sorry, we can't do anything for it." Not until I got home and looked up the TSB was I aware that there was a fix (damper) for the problem. Needless to say, I called the dealer back and asked them if they read the damn TSB all the way through, as it indicated a fix in the form of the dampener install. Some hemming and hawwing about it being for trucks that exhibit the problem while loaded but not unloaded (the TSB does not say anything about that) and then me explaining that I never said--and that they never asked--if I experienced the problem loaded or not. So I am pissed at dealer's incompetence, but happy that there is a solution to my problem finally.

I'll post back after it is installed as to whether it works or not, and a better description of just how annoying the problem is.

(Edited for clarity)

I was uncomfortable in my F450 till I installed air bags.
Comfort can be widely used and abused word, but when you have notebook flying from the dashboard at your face -you think there should be something to improve.
