Dang it!!!

Truck started riding weird, checked and my right rear tire is cupped. So now I get to buy new tires! I guess 60K and change on the original Michelin's is pretty good - whatdy'all think?

Yep! Just replaced my original Michelins with the same thing. They had 65K on them.

My husband was driving Evelyn Sunday and dropped that tire off into a pretty good hole - I'm gonna blame him for it!! LOL!!

WATCH that language !!!! this is a family site Dang it

I found rotation every 5k max is the key on my previous excursions...
i got 95k+ out of those tires...

BUT, bad shocks can cause that too... and the newer trucks have an issue with that !

Is there any chance that dropping it into a pothole will do that kind of damage? I just had a gut feeling at the time it happened that it wasn't gonna be good.

And then, I had a friend suggest I try rotating them to try and fix the cupping, has anyone heard of that working? And I get them rotated regularly anyway, part of the routine maintenance.

It's entirely possible that slamming into that pothole caused one of the belts in the tire to slip, which would cause cupping as it wears, but you'd feel the vibration long before then, I'd imagine.....

And rotating it wouldn't fix it.

If anything, rotating a cupped/feathered tire TO the rear of a solid axle, would do more for "fixing" any wear pattern problems, than rotating it up to a steering axle.

If it is cupping on the rear axle where tires normally wear evenly, my guess would be a broken belt. It is possible that you wouldn't feel minor vibration on the rear. Usually when you rotate a vibrating front tire to the rear you don't notice the vibration anymore.

Yeah, when I took it to the tire place, the tech said it was a broken belt <sigh>. Oh well, new shoes it is, at the tune of $325/each. She's waiting for me to pick her up even as we speak.

I wish I could get that kind of miles out of my tires. I swapped in some larger Nitto Terra Grapplers at 48,000 miles. I could have pushed them another 5-6,000 easily but I just don't feel safe with the big trailer and little to no tread. The best I got out of my 2006 was 52,000 miles but that set saw a lot of foul smelling smoke production.

I take it easy on the Nittos, but I bet I don't get more than 40-45,000 out of them! Oh well, it is the price you pay for a tire that will perform off the pavement. I may swap to something more wear friendly like the Dura Grappler next time to see how long they last. I just don't know if the reduced traction is worth the cost savings.

My nitto terra's are a few hundred past 30,000 and are due for replacement.
I had predicted 40,000 based on wear when newer but they hit a point where they went downhill fast.
March was two years so my goal was at least 30k but now I'm going to try for another 1,000 or so.
All four have worn close to the same which is good, I don't produce smoke with my tires so I'm sure that helps.
