If I remember right, there is an outside rail, that runs around the perimeter that attaches to both the bedsides and to the x-members. I think originally the x-members and the rail were flush across the top, the wood sat upon that and the metal covered the whole shebang. The perimeter rail is pretty much a thin angle iron. It does take a slight jog up and over the rear axle.
