Transmission compatibility 5-speed

Going to look at a 94 F250, 460 5-speed. Owner says the transmission is stuck in 5th gear. My question relates to worst case scenario, replace transmission.

So are all the 5-speeds the same throughout 92-97 F150 & F250? Or am I going to be looking for a needle in a haystack?

That would be a ZF 5 spd, not the light duty Mazda 5spd in the F150's. Should be plentiful to fix/replace.

That is definitely subject to region. I have never seen a ZF at the junkyards I frequent. There are repair parts available online.

The bellhousing is integral with the trans in these years, and Ford engine families all have different bellhousing patterns. So you need a trans off a 460 which only came in F-250 and bigger (so don't worry about the light duty Mazda trans, they didn't come on 460s so it wouldn't fit anyway).

How hard is a rebuild on a ZF transmission. I've seen rebuild kits on Ebay for ~$190.

If I was a betting man I would say there is a bent shifter fork.

A VERY easy fix without having to split the trans

I was wondering about that on my way home today. I have decided to pass on the truck, as there are many other issues that would need addressed.

Not that everyone has extras laying around, but they are out there. Yes, might have to get it online(whole or parts), but it is available and that was the point I was trying to make.

See lots and lots of M5ODs and a few T-18s and NP435s but never a ZF was all I was getting at. It does seem that vehicles optioned a certain way are more common in some regions than in others at least judging by the way people talk. Sometimes I read about going to the local yard and picking up an LS engine or Super Duty axles or .....

Maybe I need to search out some different pick n pulls.

I've been to a lot of different junkyards over the past 10 or so years, and I would not call ZF5 460 transmissions "plentiful". I have never seen a single ZF5 460 equipped truck - not a single one.

I can only vaguely recall even seeing a 460 truck period in the junkyard. The majority are 351 trucks.
