ok i have a 1989 f250 4x4 with a 5.8l engine and a 5 speed zf model tranny(light duty version). my question is what will bolt up to this tranny. i want to find parts or a donor truck with a 460 of roughly the same year as my truck and swap out the motor and computer etc. but i was wondering if i can't find a donor truck with a 5speed zf tranny then should i also be looking for one or will mine bolt up the 460?
thanks
lr
I believe lr is referring to the lighter duty of the two ZF's available (S542 vs. S547). My understanding is the 542 is the lighter duty of the two. The 547 was available after '95. The 542 was available from '87-'94. To have either of these makes lr the envy of this forum...well at least I envy you, lr. :P
I would imagine that this transmission, regardless of the fact it's a ZF would require you to match the bolt pattern of the engine to the bell housing. Since the ZF is one piece, you'll need to match the 460 to a ZF that came from a 460.
Disclaimer: A ZF from a power stroke or 6.9l diesel MAY fit, but the gear ratios MAY be different and meant for utilizing their low end torque.
Sorry about that, I didn't know there was two different zf's available behind the same motor.
As far as the 6.9/7.3 trans goes I just pulled mine out and it has the same bellhousing as a 460, but the starter bolts holes have never been drilled. That's not saying the right person couldn't drill the holes and tap them though. I am not going to use my 5spd ZF because it is missing third and the starter issue.
The first gear ratio is different on my dsl. it was 4.14, there are some gas versions that had a 5.xx I beleive. The 5 (OD) is not anything to worry about .77 vs. .76.
