Transmission Temps--Bigger Cooler?
#16
Glenn and Aaron, that's good to hear on the temps. It's probably a case of where I saw hotter temps than I expected and started to get a little worried, but they've obviously been there the entire time I've had the truck and I've never had any problems, so I'll just go with it. I'll put a bigger cooler on there like the Tru Cool for good measure, but after that I just won't worry about it

The temps I talked about are from the scan gauge I got, probably reading off the pcm like you were saying.

Byron, my trucool is between my IC and radiator. Hottest I've seen was 205 (that is not a dangerous temp), that was in high wind and 95*outside towing in OD. They work. They come with 3/8 fittings and out trucks have 5/16 lines. I wouldn't bother with the warm-up bypass. I don't think it gets too cold where you live.

The other bummer is that my Edge has been lying to me the whole time. It said 162 when my gauge was reading 185!!!!! Not cool... Now John did tell me that the PCM reads the temp from a different place than the probe for the gauge will, so the gauge will give a more honest reading. I just didn't think it would be a 25* difference. Anyone? Thanks.
In my experience watching the temperature as reported in the PCM (that's what the Edge is going to show you) is that it is +-25F from a sender in the test port on the side of the trans. Usually it was +-15F, but sometimes would get to the higher difference. And notice I said plus OR minus, the difference could go in either direction, depending on whether the trans is heating up or cooling down.
If your sender is in the line to the cooler, expect a MUCH larger difference in temperatures.

If you have access to a tuning bender just get a piece of iirc 3/8 brake line and a couple cushion clamps.

I build my own hard lines too. I got a set of genuine used Made in USA Swagelok benders on ebay for a small fortune. I've run SS instrument tubing in the past so I have some practice at it. Lots of fun figuring out the bends and lengths and I sometimes have to make a line twice.

I don't think I have any pictures of that install. When it was being installed at the thrashing I stood there like a idoit because I couldn't remember how I installed it on the mare. I can say that the flanges on the 6.0 were bent at a 90° and sheet metal screwed into the radiator up rights.
I know I got some pics of the cutting...not sure about the install though

I have a Tru-Cool 4739 that I'm about to install, along with an auxiliary external screw-on-filter kit and a change-out of the 20-year-old factory hoses. Two questions:
1. Any problems if I leave on the factory external cooler in the system for additional cooling?
2. How does one accommodate the 3/8" Tru-Cool line size with the factory 5/16" size? Can the 3/8" hoses be used on the 5/16" factory hardlines by using clamps, or what should be done to make it all fit?
