I'm looking to add to or replace the transmission cooler on my 01 F350. I haul a 38' toy hauler LOADED like only an oaky can do! I love my truck and want it to last as long as I can (as we all do)
I imagine that more is better but my real question is: After market cooler like Tru-Cool OR 6.0 Ford cooler. Pro and Cons, Cost Vs Benefit?
I'm new to FTE so if there is already a thread on this I apologize. Thank you in advance for your advise. KJ
Welcome to the Forum... Yes, a Tru-Cool coolers work great.. Get the larger one for your set-up.. But, make sure you also have trans temp gauge.. and try to keep the temps under 210*.. (I noticed on mine, the temps really climb at lower speeds like driving thru town in lower gears and a few hills)
Kevin: How do you like the ScanGauge? I am interested in how actual users feel it performs. I will continue to watch your posts as I will be getting a tranny cooler also.
Bill
Hey Bill, I like it a lot. There are a lot of functions and the fact that it not only can be used as a scanner but can monitor multiple items at once was a bonus for me. I do understand that it looks at things a bit diffrently as it gets the info via the computer and OBD II port rather than for example the tranny sump like a dedicated gauge would but with the simple plug and play install, it was hard for me to beat.
My speedo is off due to the 35" tires and using the scan gauge I can monitor my speed a bit better. There are a ton of things the computer sees and this thing makes it easy to monitor a lot of them.
Thanks Kevin, I am going to Oregon Tues. and will pick one up there. (No Kalifornia sales tax, pi$$ on the Govenator and his diesel emissions testing)
Now if you can help me find the best tranny cooler I will be a happy camper.
Thanks again. Bill
Likewise Bill, as of now the Tru-Cool is lookin pretty good. I priced a 6.0 cooler at for the other day and it was 425.00 shop cost. I said DAMN! The tru-cool is around 120-130.00 So unless the ford cooler comes in gold, its lookin pretty good. I am waiting for a bit though on more replies to see. Take care...KJ
The TruCool LPD-series (Low Pressure Drop) are a stacked-plate design, and claim to have a low-temperature internal "bypass" feature to prevent over-cooling in artic weather. I dunno...
I got mine from http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=205. it keeps the temps nice and cool, when i blew my transmission towing i was able to manage second gear all the way home, was an 8 hour drive, and still have temps below 210.
I bought the 31 row Ford cooler. I pull a 10K lb 5th wheel. I haven't seen any temp over 160 since I put in the new cooler. I almost broke 160 this weekend when the temp was 88 degrees and pulling a long hill in middle Tennessee. I didn't want to "test" various options. I wanted to get the biggest and be done with it. Installing the 31 row cooler was very easy also. I just had to adapt the lines to my stock lines.
Thank you Bobby, did you putt hat cooler in series with the stock cooler? Where did you mount it?
Take care....KJ
Lots of good info about installing a 6.0L trans cooler. Here's a start. It installs in place of your stock cooler.
FYI the 6.0L trans coolers come in two flavors, 26 and 31 row. According to the resident transmission expert, Mark K., the 26 row cooler is more efficient so both will cool your transmission by about the same amount. If your looking to go this route, save yourself about $100 and get the 26 row cooler.
