I have a 02 7.3 4x4 with an auto tranny. I really do not tow all that much, when I do it is a bass boat, or 18 hp tractor. Is an aftermarket trans temp guage necessary for my towing needs.
I would, just to be safe. You have no other means of knowing if you have a problem until it blows up on you. Mine went out at 115,000 or so without any warning at all. I was completely unloaded at the time and going down hill to a stop and it just let go altogether. Gauges are really cheap insurance.
Even more important is an aftermarket cooler, But I would put the gauge in first then the cooler so you can feel good about the cooler and the difference it made. Yes trust me the stock cooler sucks, but without the gauge you wouldn't know that!!!!!!!
When your transmission fluid reaches 200 it starts breaking down. At 240-varnishes form and transmission life expectancy is cut in half. At 260-the transmissions internal seals and rubber parts harden and major damage starts. Above 295-you transmission start slipping, clutches burn out and carbon forms. With each 20* drop in operating temperature, your fluid and equipment life doubles. Installing a cooler before damage starts and by reducing the transmission fluid temperature by as much as 60* can greatly extend the life of your transmission.
**my note- if you go above 200* while towing, i would change the oil as soon as possible as your oil has begin to "deform". the rule of thumb is that tranny temp should be 80-90* higher than ambient temp, in normal driving.
