50 ford f1 vent window setting tape

Had to repair our vent window handle today. To do so we had to take the glass out, not a bad job. I cleaned it well, painted it, and then used setting tape I picked up from cg ford. It went in fine using soapy water but it's pretty loose, not a tight fit like I expected. What's the best thickness and type of setting tape to use?

Most glass installer are using glue. The guy that installed all of my glass said he used the glue because the tape can spread the window frame to the point where it won't seal well in it's mount.

An older glass installer told me to use motor oil on the setting tape, it swells the tape making the glass fit tighter. And no, once the oil has soaked into the tape the glass won't slip back out. The wing windows were put into my 53 this way 6 years ago.
If you use urethane to glue the glass in, good luck if you ever break one.

You bought "glass tape" from C & G Ford Parts in Escondido CA (a loong way from GA) when EVERY auto glass shop has it?

Glass tape adheres vent window glass to the frame, door glass to the window channel, there are different widths.

I hope you get it figured out. The vent frame inside width on my '52 is .360" and the original glass is about .220" - only problem is that my replacement glass measures about .245" so I will need thinner tape than original. I've got a couple different widths to try, and was also told to "slather" it with motor oil when installing. - Bob

mic'd the glass in four places and frame in four places, averaged both, took the difference and halved it, exactly 1/16. The tape from cg is 3/64 which would probably work on new glass is too thin for original glass. Wish me luck on 1/16. After soaking in oil do you wipe it down at all or insert with it dripping?

I didn't soak in oil, just coated with oil, wrapped the tape around glass and pushed it into place. Clean the glass with window cleaner and you're good to go.

I just installed my vent windows using new glass and used 1/16" tape which worked out well. It is my understanding that soaking the seal in oil was for the old cork/rubber seals and not for the newer (?) all rubber type. The local glass installer told me to use mineral spirits.
