My 54 was not messed up when I bought it from my Grandpa. He bought it new. The only thing that was not stock was a diamond plate sheet over the bed wood and some heavy steel around the back of the bed I guess to reinforce it.
Now, my 70 F350? Like a lot of your trucks the electrical wiring was/is a mess. The truck was once used by a Boy Scout Camp so I think it sat idle for long periods of time. Varmints (red squirrels or chipmunks) got into it and did some chewing. The PO rewired it using any wire he had... orange extension cord, Romex house wiring, and all white auto wiring. And since he used Romex, he used wire nuts! I have removed some of the wire nuts, taped up others. I did attach separate brake lights and ran a separate brake wire to get rid of a gremlin I had with the tail lights, blinkers, and stop lights. Oh, he also had a huge headlight used on trucks when they have a snow plow on as a backup light! I got rid of that when I put on the new brake lights.
Here you can see the huge backup light!

Most of the work done on my truck by the original builder was done decently with top grade parts, but there is always a few things that make you say WTF were they thinking...
Obviously wiring wasn't a strong suit. There had already been an under dash electrical fire some time in it's past. Note wires spliced to other wires, spliced to other wires, spliced to still other wires, wires not connected to anything, a radio shack type electronic store thin phenolic fuse board of glass tube fuses, switches controlling ??? There was even a small plastic "black box" with an unidentified circuit board inside and several wires coming out stuck up on top the wire rat's nest not connected to anything, the wires had been stripped back and showed signs that they had once been connected to something?! (To add to the mystery there was an old florist shop receipt folded up inside the box).
Item 2:
Front disk brakes were added with a new dual circuit MC under floor. Then the T56 6 speed was installed with it's hydraulic clutch, so an aftermarket hanging clutch pedal was installed with the thru floor brake pedal and the original 56 brake MC was mounted to the firewall for the clutch. To flatten the firewall for the MC the OEM stiffening ribs were sawn open and hammered flat, but not rewelded. Note the 2 large aluminum blocks bolted to the clutch pedal arm to act as travel stops.

I tore out every bit of old wire and totally rewired with an Ez wiring harness.

I think that my truck had the toyota power steering and then before I bought it they replaced it with just the manual and just started the 3 bolts holding it on. I drove it that way for awhile(just in the neighborhood). It just shows you that there are a lot of wanna be's and they walk amongst us.
