Well, when I got the tractor, I got an '81 Honda CB650 with it. It wasn't running and I knew that, but I'm still having trouble with it. I've got it running on 3 out of 4 cylinders now. At first I thought spark, but that seems to be OK now. I don't have a compression testor, so I think I'l try the thumb trick. At least if it's really bad, I'll know. There's valve train rattle there, so I'm thinking the valves may be sticking. I'll keep you updated. THere's only 14000km on it, so I'd really like to get it going.
Check #2 cylinder first, it is usually the first to go. Also, no matter what take the carbs off and give them a good cleaning and when your done put a fuel filter in the line. Just words of experience, I used to own an 81 CB900. Those are nice little bikes, you will like it when you get it running right.
I did quite a bit of work to one of those a few years ago for a friend. Cleaned all the carbs and set them, then did the brakes. Changed the throttle cables. Once it was done pulled off all the tins and did a high gloss black paint job then airbrushed pearl blue flames on top and cleared it about 10 times for some wicked depth. Guy crashed it a month later and wanted 800 for it, I offered 400 and he sold it for 500, guess he was grateful for the work I hod done to it.
The first thing I did was give the entire fuel system a good cleaning. Then I checked the plugs and wires. It had been sitting for a while, so I knew it wouldn't just fire up. The carbs were dirty, but I've definitely seen a LOT worse. Working weekend nighrts right now, so there's not time to play with it. Soon though.
I may ride it. I have an '81 Suzuki GS650GL for me. This ones actually for the wife. My Dad's coming over Sunday and we'll have a good look at it then.
I'd recomend not getting a bike at a salvage auction. You just never know. If the frame is off even a bit, it'll really cause problems with driveability. Better off to look at a good used bike and take someone along that you trust and knows a LOT about bikes. Just my 3 cents.
